Bordeaux 1 – Chelsea 1 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) Petr Cech made a smart save to deny Mathieu Chalme’s fierce right-footed shot after 20 minutes in Bordeaux. In a goalless opening 45, one of the highlights was some sublime juggling and ball skills from Yoann Gourcuff. The Blues made the breakthrough on the hour mark, Frank Lampard released Nicolas Anelka whose pace took him throughÂ on goal where he finished expertly. But just as it looked as if Chelsea would claim the three points, Alou Diarra headed an equaliser seven minutes from time.
Liverpool 1 – Marseille 0 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) After dominating the opening exchanges with Marseille, Liverpool moved ahead when Steven Gerrard was gifted too much space to head in Xabi Alonso’s deep cross. The visitors came close to an equaliser but Taye Taiwo’s rasping 30-yard free-kick could only find the post. The Reds began to lose concentration around the hour mark, gifting Marseille three opportunities to find an equaliser. The match ended on a sour note after the sides had a push and a shove following a Mascherano foul.
Sporting Lisbon 2 – Barcelona 5 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.)Â Xavi gave Sporting an early warning sign by smashing a free-kick onto the bar. The hosts failed to take heed, and soon found themselves behind when Thierry Henry struck after great work from Lionel Messi. And the second was soon in following, Gerard Pique bundling the ball over the line from a corner. After the break Lionel Messi added the killer third, Barca took a lightning quick free-kick on the edge of the box and the tiny Argentine slotted home. Things then spiced up when Miguel Veloso (curling free-kick) and then Liedson (fine finish) scored two quick goals for the hosts. But hopes of a comeback were dashed when Marco Caneira acrobatically put through his own net, and sub-Bojan scored a fifth from the spot for Barca.
Inter Milan 0 – Panathinaikos 1 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Panathinaikos survived an early scare at the San Siro when Adriano’s shot hit the outside of the post. Zlatan came with a whisker from finding the net, lifting his shot just over the bar from Cambiasso’s through-ball. Pana threatened Cesar’s goal when Junior Simao fired narrowly wide at the start of the second half. And the form book went out the window when Josu Sarriegi stabbed the Greeks into the lead to stun Mourinho’s Inter.
CFR Cluj 1 – Roma 3 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.)Â Cluj, whose Champions League hopes have sunk fast, conceded an early goal to group leaders Roma, Matteo Brighi finding the net from Simone Perrotta’s cross. Roma’s lead was soon doubled as captain fantastic, Francesco Totti, struck home a perfect free-kick. But Cluj pulled themselves back into the game when Yssouf Kone scored on the rebound after Doni only parried Pereira’s tame shot. After the break Roma restored their two goal cushion, Rodrigo Taddei teeing up Brighi for his second of the night.
Atletico Madrid 2 – PSV 1 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) At an empty Vicente Calderon Stadium, Atletico made home advantage count against PSV as Simao bagged the opener after scuffing his initial shot. And the Dutch fell further behind when poor defending from a corner allowed Maxi Rodriguez to rocket home the second. The break appeared to allow PSV to refocus, and on the restart they got back in the match when Danny Koevermans scored from a scrappy corner.
Shakhtar Donetsk 5 – Basel 0 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.)Â As he did in Switzerland, Jadson breached the Basel backline with a cool side-footed effort to give Shaktar the lead. Willian made it 2-0 five minutes after the interval, before Jadson scored two goals in eight minutes and second-half substitute Yevgen Seleznyov completed the rout in theÂ 75th. Shakhtar qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Anorthosis 2 – Werder Bremen 2 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.)Â The hosts pulled ahead in the 62nd minute when Nikos Nikolaou struck a sweet half-volley, low past Werder’s stand-in keeper Christian Vander. And Anorthosis scored a second in the 68th minute when a sweeping attack was finished by Savio. But Werder rallied, first through a Diego penalty before Hugo Almeida struck a low volley to equalise.
