Burnley 1 – Manchester United 0 (Premier League, August 19, 2009) Michael Carrick had an early chance for United from a Giggs corner at Burnley, but it was the Clarets who struck first in the 19th minute through a superb Robbie Blake volley. United had the chance to equalise when Evra was hacked in the box, but Michael Carrick saw his penalty saved. Robbie Blake saw a free-kick whistle past the post at the start of the second half.
Liverpool 4 – Stoke 0 (Premier League, August 19, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Fernando Torres opened his account for the season to put the Reds ahead, and an acrobatic second from Glen Johnson on the stroke of halftime doubled the Merseysiders’ lead. Dirk Kuyt wrapped up the match with a third after the break, David Ngog adding number four in injury time.

Hull 1 – Tottenham 5 (Premier League, August 19, 2009) (MOTD highlights here.) Spurs produced an excellent performance at the KC Stadium with Jermain Defoe claiming a hat-trick. Defoe opened the scoring and Wilson Palacios added a second shortly after. Stephen Hunt pulled one back from a free-kick that evaded everyone only for Defoe to fire home Spurs’ third before the break. Well worked second half goals from Robbie Keane and Defoe again completed the rout.

Birmingham 1 – Portsmouth 0 (Premier League, August 19, 2009) Pompey lost their second successive match to the same scoreline in cruel fashion. In the 90th minute of the match David James was adjudged to have fouled Sebastian Larsson and James McFadden converted from the penalty spot to secure Birmingham’s first three points of the campaign.
Tranmere 0 – MK Dons 1 (League One, August 18, 2009)
