Pompey keep Sunderland deep in relegation trouble

Portsmouth 3 – Sunderland 1 (Premier League, May 18, 2009) After 58 goalless minutes in which both Pompey and Sunderland had struck the inside of the post, the Black Cats took the lead with a superb engineered by Calum Davenport, the centre-half strode out of defence down the right hand side before releasing an inch-perfect cross for Kenwyne Jones to tuck home. But Davenport went from hero to villain inside 60 seconds, the defender misplaced a header into the path of John Utaka who muscled his way in the box to score past Martin Fulop. The Black Cats then imploded as Anton Ferdinand kicked thin-air when trying to meet a long punt forward, Utaka collected the loose ball and rounded Fulop before Phil Bardsley, trying to clear the danger, slid the ball over his own line. With Sunderland seeking an equaliser, Pompey broke in the 87th minute and Armand Traore fired a left-footed shot into the far corner.
