Just after the half hour Arsenal thought they should have had a penalty for a foul on Robin van Persie. Minutes later, Sunderland took the lead, thanks to a fine low strike from Kieran Richardson. With 13 minutes to go it was all over and Arsenal were staring at another major defeat and a seventh season without a trophy as a lightning Sunderland break ended with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put through his own net on the goal line.

Even before the game there was plenty to talk about. Nicklas Bendtner’s Bugsy Malone hat and then Robin van Persie was seen showing the Arsenal mascot how to shake hands.
