FA Cup 3rd round: United make light work of the Saints; Milner’s double sends Villa through

Southampton 0 – Manchester United 3 (FA Cup, January 4, 2009) (Longer highlights here, extended highlights here.) Manchester United took the lead at st. Mary’s when Danny Welbeck was in the right place to turn in a Nani corner after O’Shea’s header had hit the bar. The Saints job then became much harder when Matt Paterson was sent off for a poor foul on Vidic. United went 2-up early in the second half when Nani scored from the spot. In total control United added a late third, Rooney teed up Darren Gibson to add his name to the scoresheet.

Gillingham 1 – Aston Villa 2 (FA Cup, January 4, 2009) Villa took the lead at the Priestfield stadium with a slick move finished expertly by James Milner after Stiliyan Petrov robbed Adam Miller of the ball in midfield. But in the second half the Gils experienced their own bit of cup magic when Simeon Jackson turned Zat Knight before slamming a shot past Brad Friedel. But hopes of an upset were dashed eight minutes from time, Ashley Young won a penalty and James Milner stroked home his second of the game.

Hull 0 – Newcastle 0 (FA Cup, January 3, 2009) Shay Given was again in fine form as the Toon forced a replay with the Tigers.
