Chelsea’s first effort came inside the opening 30 seconds as Didier Drogba whacked a shot over the Liverpool bar. The Blues took the lead in the 10th minute as Spearing lost the ball in midfield, Mata sent Ramires clean through and the midfielder powered a shot that Riena could only help into the near post. The end of the first half saw a couple of bookings as John Obi Mikel took out Steven Gerrard, only for the Nigerian to get taken out minutes later by Daniel Agger. The Scousers were starring defeat full in the face in the 52nd minute as Didier Drogba drilled a low left-footer past Riena for his historic 4th FA Cup final goal. With 25 minutes remaining Downing flukily got the ball into sub Andy Carroll’s feet in the Blues box and, after a smart shimmy, the ponytailed forward halved the deficit. In the final ten minutes the match had a major moment as Andy Carroll powered a header towards the net that Petr Cech managed to stop on the line.
