Dan Gosling’s late late winner knocks Liverpool out the FA Cup; Villa, Blackburn & Burnely all progress

Everton 1 – Liverpool 0 (AET) (FA Cup, February 4, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) In the third meeting between Everton and Liverpool in recent weeks, Xabi Alonso had the first shot on target in the FA Cup replay. (First half highlights here.) In the second half Liverpool had Lucas Leiva sent off for a second booking. But Everton could not capitalise, and the match headed to extra time where one minute from the dreaded penalty shootout Andy Van Der Medye’s cross fell to young Dan Gosling and he curled a (deflected) shot past Riena for the winner.

Aston Villa 3 – Doncaster 1 (FA Cup, February 4, 2009) Steve Sidwell and a defelcted John Carew effort put Villa into a commanding lead, Jason Price beat Guzan to put the Championship side back into the game, but Nathan Delfouneso completed the win.

Blackburn 2 – Sunderland 1 (AET) (FA Cup, February 4, 2009) Forgotten man David Healy gave the Black Cats the perfect start with the opening goal after seven minutes with a neat finish. Rovers rallied, and Aaron Mokoena equalised with his first goal in almost two years. The match went into extra time, where Benni McCarthy stepped off the bench to steer Blackburn into the fifth round heading home a Carlos Villanueva free-kick.

Burnley 3 – West Brom 1 (FA Cup, February 3, 2009) Burnley claimed their fourth Premier League scalp of the season. Wade Elliot and Steven Thompson put the home side two- up before Gianni Zuiverloon pulled one back. Robbie Blake twisted the WBA defence ragged to set up Thompson for his second late on.
