Aaron Lennon then showed quick feet and a low centre of gravity to skip past a couple of challenges to force Van der Sar to get down low to turn his shot away. Spurs wasted another chance when Modric sent a header over the bar. (First-half highlights here.) Van der Sar was again called upon to turn away David Bentley’s free-kick in the second half while at the other end Ferdinand headed just over the bar from Giggs’ corner. Liverpool 2 – Hull City 2 (Premier League, December 13, 2008) Paul McShane stunned Anfield just after ten minutes when he planted a header past Reina from a King cross. The Tigers were in dreamland ten minutes later when Jamie Carragher put through his own net from a Mendy cross. Steven Gerrard pulled one back almost straight away from a low Kuyt cross. Stevie G then scored the equaliser after he was teed up by Benayoun. (First-half goals here, highlights here.) Boro equalised just after the half-hour, Jeremie Aliadiere planting a fine header from a Tuncay cross.

Sunderland 4 – West Brom 0 (Premier League, December 13, 2008) Sunderland returned to winning ways thanks to an easy win over the bottom side. Kenwyne Jones scored an early brace, Andy Reid added the third with a header at the back post (first three goals here) and Djibril Cisse scored a penalty after the break.
Liverpool 1 – Manchester United 3 (Barclays Premier Reserve League, December 13, 2008) United’s kids ended the year in style beating the old enemy Liverpool with Norwood, Macheda and Morrison scoring for United while Dalla Valle scored for the Scousers.
