Chelsea 2 – CFR Cluj 1 (Champions League, December 9, 2008) (ITV highlights here.) After a frustrating and nervous opening from Chelsea, the Blues scored the crucial opener from a set play as Deco’s free-kick found Salomon Kalou free on the penalty spot and the forward turned the ball into the net. (First half highlights here.) In the 55th minute Stamford Bridge fell silent, Panin broke down the right and delivered an inch-perfect cross to Yssouf Kone at the back post who expertly steered his header into Cech’s top corner. Scolari brought on Didier Drogba to find him a winner, and the Ivorian came up trumps with a brilliant goal, Joe Cole chipped the ball into his path and the number 11 crashed the ball past Claro. PSV 1 – Liverpool 3 (Champions League, December 9, 2008) (Longer highlights here and ITV highlights here.) Liverpool fell behind to PSV with a poor defensive goal, Mascherano failed to cut out a corner, the ball ricocheted in the box and Danko Lazovic was on hand to slot home. On the stroke of halftime the Reds drew level, Lucas Leiva’s cross found Ryan Babel and the Dutchman guided his header wide of Andreas Isaksson. In the 67th minute Albert Riera gave Liverpool the lead with a stunning 25-yard bullet that ripped into the net. David Ngog wrapped up the win racing through and beating Isaksson with a low drive.
Barcelona 2 – Shakhtar Donetsk 3 (Champions League, December 9, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Barcelona sent out a second string eleven against Shakhtar Donetsk and the visitors took advantage of their young opponents inexperience when Oleksandr Gladkyy fired past Jorquera. In the second half Oleksandr Gladkyy bagged his second with a back-post header from a free-kick. But Barca hit back through one of their more experienced players, as Sylvinho rolled back the years with a superb strike in the near post. Fernandinho restored Shakhtar’s two goal cushion sliding in a cross at the far post, only for Sergei Busquets to pull Barca back once more.
Werder Bremen 2 – Inter Milan 1 (Champions League, December 9, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Inter Milan slipped behind after the hour mark with a series of poor defensive errors, Claudio Pizarro eventually scoring past Cesar. Markus Rosenberg sunk Mourinho’s side further into the mire when he turned home Ozil’s cross, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the goal of the game, curling a 25-yard beauty in off the foot of the post.
Roma 2 – Bordeaux 0 (Champions League, December 9, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Roma qualified as group leaders win a comfortable win over Bordeaux, Matteo Brighi controlled a low Simone Perrotta cross from the right and drove home to open the scoring just after the hour and Francesco Totti fired in from the edge of the box to seal victory in the 79th minute.
Basel 0 – Sporting Lisbon 1 (Champions League, December 9, 2008) Sporting were the first team of the night to break the deadlock, taking a 20th minute lead at lowly Basel as Yannick Djalo tucked home Izmailov’s cross.
Marseille 0 – Atletico Madrid 0 (Champions League, December 9, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) A game of few chances results in OM grabbing a place in the UEFA Cup as Atletico have to settle for second place in Group D and continue to rue penalty decisions at Anfield.
Indonesia 0 – Singapore 2 (East Asian Championship, December 9, 2008) Baihakki Khaizan and Shi Jiayi scored for Singapore and the defending champions progress to the semi-finals.
