Dortmund edge out Gladbach; Ajax cruise past NAC; Gala go second in Turkey

Borussia Dortmund 2 – Monchengladbach 1 (Bundesliga, December 12, 2008) Mohamed Zidan struck a volley in the 35th minute that looped over keeper Heimeroth for the opener. Three minutes later the hosts were reduced to 10-men when Tamas Hajnal was sent off for his second yellow card of the match, but although a man down, Dortmund went 2-up as Blaszczykowski’s pass was converted by Nuri Sahin. The visitors got back into the match with 10 minutes remaining when Johannes van den Bergh capitalised on a poor clearance and fired in a sweet left-foot volley on the angle.

Ajax 3 – NAC 0 (Eredivisie, December 12, 2008) Dario Cvitanich opened the scoring and Luis Suarez doubled the lead from the penalty spot 10 minutes in to the second half, Kees Kwakman seeing red for conceding the spot-kick. Genclerbirligi 1 – Galatasaray 3 (Super Lig, December 12, 2008) Gala fell behind to their opponents from Ankara when Burhan Eser scored after 26 minutes. But the visitors turned the game around by the break thanks to goals from Lincoln, red-hot Milan Baros and Arda Turan to send them into second place in Turkey.

Albinoleffe 2 – Frosinone 2 (Serie B, December 12, 2008) Dedic put the visitors ahead with a penalty, and Leffe fell further behind when poor goalkeeping from Coser allowed a tame Antonazzo strike to squeeze in for 2-nil. Albinoleffe pulled a goal back when Ruopolo turned in a Laner cross, and the comeback was completed when Caremi was left alone to convert a Madonna ball for 2-2.

Al Ahly 2 – Pachuca 4 (AET) (Club World Cup, December 12, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) The Egyptians took the lead when Aboutrika’s cross was turned into his own net by Fausto Pinto, and Al Ahly’s lead was extended when Flavio knocked in the second from close range before the break. In the second half the Mexicans responded, a Luis Montes free-kick missed everyone to nestle in the far corner and Christian Gimenez fired a direct free-kick into the top corner to send the match into extra-time. Damian Alvarez put Pachuca ahead in the 98th minute, Gimenez bagging his second to knock the Africans out.
