9-man Rangers crash out the Champions League to 10-man Malmo

Malmo 1 – Rangers 1 (Agg. 2-1) (Champions League qualifier third round second leg, August 3, 2011) Rangers were reduced to 10-men after only 18 minutes in Sweden when Steven Whittaker was dismissed for throwing the ball at Jimmy Durmaz during an off-the-ball incident. But the Scots defied the odds to score in the the 24th minute as Nikica Jelavic sidefooted home at the far post to bring Gers level on aggregate. Jimmy Durmaz tried to get Maurice Edu sent off when the Malmo man feigned taking an elbow to the head although no contact was made. The half ended on a fiery note as Lee McCulloch took out Jimmy Durmaz and the Swede reacted by kicking out at the Scot, although both avoided dismissals. In the 66th minute Rangers were left with just nine men on the pitch after Madjid Bougherra saw red for elbowing Dardan Rexhepi on the back of the head. Minutes later Malmo collected their first dismissal when Ricardinho received his second yellow, Allan McGregor then pulled off a top save to deny Jansen’s point-blank header, but hopes that Rangers might pull the rabbit out the hat were snuffed when Jiloan Hamad smashed in an 18-yard bullet to leave the Gers chasing again.
