Wayne Rooney brought out a good save from Ross Turnbull in the opening exchanges. Rooney then teed up Cristiano Ronaldo at the back post but the number seven dragged his shot wide. United dominated the match, but the Red Devils had to wait until the 69th minute to finally go ahead, David Wheater could only cushion Carrick’s cross to Dimitar Berbatov and the Bulgarian lashed in the opener. Alki 1 – Omonia Nicosia 0 (Cypriot First Division, December 29, 2008) It took Christofi just 46 seconds to find the back of the net, and Alki held on for the win.
Peru 2 – Extremadura 2 (Friendly, December 27, 2008) Peru took the lead through Junior Ross only for the Spaniards to draw level through Rai. Back came Peru as Pedro Garcia restored the hosts’ adavnatge. But the game ended in hugely controversial circumstances as the referee awarded the visitors a late penalty only to be chased around the pitch by the Peruvian players, with Rai notching his brace from the spot.
