Arminia pick up a point at Bayer in their efforts to beat the Bundesliga drop

Bayer Leverkusen 2 – Arminia Bielefeld 2 (Bundesliga, May 8, 2009) Stefan Kiessling headed Leverkusen into the lead after 21 minutes, Radim Kucera brought relegation threatened Arminia level with a header from a set-play sixty seconds later. Bayer then fell behind after again failing to deal with a free-kick, Robert Tesche scoring the third header of the match in the 39th minute. (First half highlights here.) Patrick Helmes earned Bayer a share of the spoils with a 79th minute equaliser.

Vitoria Guimaraes 0 – Rio Ave 1 (Superliga, May 8, 2009) Coentrao’s penalty minutes before the break was the difference between the sides.

Germinal Beerschot 3 – KV Mechelen 1 (Jupiler League, May 8, 2009) Faris Haroun put the hosts ahead after seven minutes and Tosin Dosunmu doubled their advantage just before the hour mark. Giuseppe Rossini halved the deficit midway through the second half but any hope of a comeback was snuffed out three minutes from time when Henri Munyaneza bagged the third.

Livorno 0 – Triestina 1 (Serie B, May 8, 2009) Antonelli’s fourth minute cross-shot took De Lucia by surprise, to hand Triestina the lead which they never lost. The result confirmed Bari’s Serie A promotion.

Lechia Gdansk 3 – Jagiellonia Bialystok 1 (Ekstraklasa, May 8, 2009) Peter Cvirik headed Lechia into the lead on the half hour, Thiago Cionek bringing the visitors level two minutes later with a looping header before the goalscorer was then sent off (second yellow) for his post goal celebrations. Unbelievably poor defending from the visitors allowed Karol Piatekto score just before the break, Lukasz Surma crashing home the third at the start of the second half.

Tampere United 0 – TPS Turku 2 (Veikkausliiga, May 8, 2009) Christian Andreasen gave Turku the lead in the 29th minute, Englishman and Fulham loanee Wayne Brown wrapping up the match with the second five minutes from time. Turku moved into second in the league.

New York Red Bulls 4 – San Jose Earthquakes 1 (MLS, May 8, 2009) Jorge Rojas opened after his direct free-kick missed everyone to nestle in the net. In the 13th minute it was Rojas again, this time putting a header past Cannon from a Kandji cross. Juan Pablo Angel bagged the third before Macoumba Kandji fially got his name on the scoresheet with a 45-yard rocket that skidded past Cannon. San Jose got its lone goal in the final minute of the first half when Ryan Johnson scored his third of the season.

Tigre 1 – Argentinos Juniors 1 (Clausura, May 8, 2009) Horrible defending from the hosts resulted with the keeper passing the ball straight to Argentinos forward Gabriel Penalba who scored after 22 minutes. Carlos Luna pulled Tigre level with a header seven minutes later.

Banfield 2 – Gimnasia Jujuy 2 (Clausura, May 8, 2009) Ricardo Gomez and Walter Busse had the visitors 2-up inside 12 minutes. Santiago Silva pulled a goal backl for Banfield bundling hom ea set-play, before Sebastian Fernandez lvelled the match midway through the second half.
