Barcelona 2 – Atletico Madrid 1 (Agg. 5-2) (Copa del Rey, January 14, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Defying the form book, Atletico Madrid stole the early advantage at the Nou Camp when Florent Sinama-Pongolle connected with a free-kick to head the Rojiblancos ahead. But Barca weren’t behind for long as woeful Atletico defending allowed Bojan to head home Sylvinho’s cross unchallenged. Barca won the won late in the second half, a scintillating run from Iniesta down the left eventually saw the ball fall to Eidur Gudjohnsen to smash home.
Valencia 3 – Racing Santander 1 (Agg. 4-2) (AET) (Copa del Rey, January 14, 2009) Vicente gave Valencia the lead from the spot against Racing Santander only for Colsa to draw the visitors level three minutes later with a spectacular bicycle kick. The game went into extra time where Racing shot themselves in the foot, a sloppy backpass fell to Vicente who ran through to net his second of the match. With Racing throwing caution to the wind, Joaquin wrapped up the win finishing off a lightening counter-broke.
Espanyol 1* – Poli Ejido 0 (Agg. 3-3) (Copa del Rey, January 14, 2009) Roman Martinez gave Espanyol the lead over Poli Ejido powering home a header from a corner. Espanyol progressed on away goals.
Deportivo La Coruna 0 – Sevilla 3 (Agg. 1-5) (Copa del Rey, January 14, 2009) Meeting for the third time in eight days Deportivo hosted Sevilla, and the visitors needed just 60 seconds to take the lead, Jesus Navas volleying home a cross at the back post. Luis Fabiano added a second with a cool finish after 23 minutes before Fabiano made it 3-nil at the break as Depor’s defence fell apart. Depor lost Omar Bravo on the hour mark, and seven minutes from time Sevilla had keeper Palop sent off for bringing down Colotto in the box. Javier Chevanton, making a long awaited return to the Sevilla side, found himself going in goal to face the penalty and incredibly the spot-kick went wide.
Valladolid 2 – Sporting Gijon 1 (Agg. 3-4) (Copa del Rey, January 14, 2009) Valladolid took the lead after 23 minutes through Fabian Canobbio. Pedro Leon’s 77th minute goal appeared to be sending Valladolid through on away goals, but Jorge’s late effort took Gijon into the last eight.
