“This is a very special moment. I only want to thank everybody who came to this match. I will never forget this night. I quit happy. I am done. I only have words of thanks for everybody.” - Marcelo Salas.
Football waves goodbye to yet another legend this week as Chile’s all-time record goalscorer Marcelo Salas hung up his boots after playing his final match - a testimonial in front of 50,000 at Santiago’s National Stadium.
The former Lazio and Juventus striker, who scored 37 international goals, organised the match between former Chile players including the legendary Ivan Zamarano, and the ‘Friends of Salas’ XI that included Uruguayans Enzo Francescoli and Paolo Montero, Argentine pairing of Ariel Ortega and Leonardo Rodriguez and Frenchman David Trezeguet.
As a sign of respect for Salas, every player sporting the number 11 on their shirts. And the night was made that extra special as the marksmen bagged a hat-trick in the exhibition match, the match finishing 3-all.
Highlights from Marcelo Salas’ testimonial match can be seen here.

lol @ how offside the first goal was

no need for lol, he was offside, but his trailing foot was level so not too bad. it was a testimonial, his testimonial, so i suppose they let him off.
but the first goal was still quality, back heel and one touch passing was class, and a splendid finish. loved it. i see trezeguet cant stop scoring. he needs to be bought by someone, wasted at juve. wouldnt mind him at LFC, at 31/32, he would accept being backup for torres so long as he gets a good few starts, which no doubt he would, would be cheap and score goals inevitably.
but back to salas, i think his partnership with zamorano was probably one of the best things about their era. montero and ortega, again, quality players in their day. wish i could have watched the full game, bet it would have been fun
