Fenerbahce 2 – Arsenal 5 (Champions League, October 21, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Emmanuel Adebayor and Theo Walcott scored twice in a minute to hand The Gunners a cushion and Abou Diaby scored a couple of minutes after Mikael Silvestre had turned the ball into his own net. Alex Song lashed home a fourth at the start of the second half. Dani Guiza cut the deficit late on, but Arsenal’s performance was capped by a late fifth from Aaron Ramsey.
Manchester United 3 – Celtic 0 (Champions League, October 21, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) United took the lead on the half-hour when Dimitar Berbatov expertly flicked home a corner in what looked like a slightly offside position. Berbatov got the second just after the break, also from what looked like an offside position, following up on a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick. Wayne Rooney scored the third late on following a flowing move that started with van der Sar.
Juventus 2 – Real Madrid 1 (Champions League, October 21, 2008) Alessandro Del Piero rolled back the years with a superb 25-yard curler to open the scoring. Amauri added a second and it proved vital as Ruud van Nistelrooy set up a grandstand finish with a second-half strike for Real.
Bayern Munich 3 – Fiorentina 0 (Champions League, October 21, 2008) Miroslav Klose gave the home side the lead after only four minutes as he latched on to Luca Toni’s header to finish with aplomb. On 25 minutes Bastian Schweinsteiger added a second with a fine shot past Sebastien Frey. And in the dying minutes Ze Roberto sealed the win with a fine third.
Villarreal 6 – Aalborg 3 (Champions League, October 21, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Saganowski gave Aalborg a surprise lead, but Villarreal levelled through Rossi and five minutes later Capdevila unleashed an unstoppable half-volley to give the Spaniards the lead. But back came the Danes, as Bruce Rioch’s side restored parity through a dinked Envoldsen finish. After the break Villarreal again turned on the style as Llorente (67) followed up a Marcos Senna drive and the forward then grabbed his side’s fourth shortly after. Johansson pulled a goal back for Aalborg with 13 minutes remaining, but Robert Pires restored Villarreal’s three-goal advantage and Llorente wrapped up his hat-trick in the dying stages.
Steaua Bucharest 3 – Lyon 5 (Champions League, October 21, 2008) The Romanians were two goals to the good inside 11 minutes thanks to strikes from Henrique and Petre. The French champions drew level through Keita (stunning volley) and Benzema, but Petre fired Steaua ahead at the interval. Fred proved to be an inspired substitution, finding the leveller in the 69th minute. Benzema’s effort, a clever volley from a free-kick, then gave Lyon the advantage, and the French champions sealed the win when Fred netted his second in the dying minutes.
Zenit St. Petersburg 1 – BATE Borisov 1 (Champions League, October 21, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) BATE stunned their hosts with a textbook counter-attacking punch when half-time substitute Pavel Nekhaychik slotted in from close range. Tekke deservedly rescued a point for Zenit with nine minutes remaining as he broke the BATE offside trap to volley an equaliser.
Porto 0 – Dynamo Kiev 1 (Champions League, October 21, 2008) The shock of the night came in Portugal, where Kiev struck after 27 minutes as Olexandr Aliyev smashed a brilliant free-kick beyond keeper Nuno.

Leeds 2 – Leyton Orient 1 (League One, October 21, 2008) Jermaine Beckford missed an early penalty and they were punished when they fell behind to a Dean Morgan goal. But Leeds were level minutes later with an own-goal by Stephen Purches, and they quickly found a second through Becchio’s header.

Estudiantes 2 – Botafogo 0 (Copa Sudamericana, October 21, 2008)The Brazilians fell behind in the 56th minute when their keeper misjudged a corner and Boselli scored at the far post. The win was sealed with a fabulous goal from Juan Sebastian Veron (his second in a week) who drilled a shot into the top corner.
