Vote: Top 10 Goals of the Week

February 20th, 2012

What a week for golazos!

The list kicks off with a goal that had whiff of that George Weah solo special for Milan against Verona all those years ago, as a little known Lebanese forward picked up a corner on the edge of his own box before (and here is where the similarities break down) scoring a ridiculous lobbed golazo from way, way out.

Goal 2 consisted of not just one, but two backheels in the attack as Zenit scored the goal of the week in the Champions League, whilst Europe’s bastard club competition – the Europa League – provided a 35-yard howitzer that blew away Stoke at position 3.

In Brazil on Friday night the long range rippers kept flowing with a sensational right-footed strike (goal 4), whilst on Saturday in Germany the match between Kaiserslautern and Borussia Monchengladbach supplied two entries in our top ten with an outside-of-the-boot curler (goal 5) and yet another top-corner torpedeo (goal 6).

AFCON 2012 maybe over but the African Champions League is only just beginning, and last weekend’s big match in Tunisia supplied an unstoppable far corner floater at spot seven.

That leaves three final golazos: the solo goal of the week in Poland sits at position eight, the obligatory acrobatic entry of the week is found at number nine, whilst the top ten is closed out with a Brazilian belter from PSG’s newly recruited centre-half.

Voting for your favourite goal can be made at the bottom of this post and otherwise just sit back & enjoy!

February 13th, 2012

This week’s top ten includes goals from all corners of the planet.

It starts in Malaysia with a sublime half-volley, continues onto Africa with the best solo goal of AFCON 2012, while entry number three from Iran continues the theme of solo specials.

2012 has been a miserable year for Sporting Lisbon so far (just two wins in ten matches) but that gloominess was momentarily forgotten with a wonder-strike at number four.

The halfway point in our list is straddled by two brilliant goals from Gladbach stars; a majestic give-go-give-go-and-finish, followed by a picture-perfect free-kick from a high-flying Venezuelan star.

The most outrageous must-see goal of the week sits at number seven, followed by a sweet-as-a-nut hit from Spain on Sunday night.

Staying in La Liga, Cristiano Ronaldo netted yet another wonder-goal at number nine, whilst a terrific curler from Argentina closes out the list.

Voting for your favourite goal can be made at the bottom of this post and otherwise just sit back & enjoy!

It’s easy to fall into hyperbole, but this week’s collection of golazos is really ridonkulous.

In a long list of also-runs, Matthias Lepiller (solo stunner), Ahmed Saleh (what a lob!), Matias Saurez (a half-volley par excellence), Nahuel Fioretto (halfway-line golazo) and Roberto Torres (a 40-yard lob) all have plenty of reason to be pissed that they didn’t make the cut. If truth be told, if they were more famous they probably would have made their way into the top ten.

But enough about those who didn’t make the cut. Onto those who did.

AFCON 2012 witnessed it’s first true golazo in position one in our list, followed by a terrific looping half-volley from a rehabilitated Black Cat at spot two, while it was back to Africa for goal three and a world-class free-kick from Yaya.

A former Magpie claimed a quick-thinking, injury time, 60-yarder at position four, a no-lift thunderbolt from a random Brazilian left-back appears at five, while goal six brings a jaw-dropping acrobatic goal of the week from a little-known Brazilian striker.

Goal seven is a goal covered in finesse and precision shooting from Portugal, and goal eight presents an outstanding who-needs-to-look-at-the-goal flick from Italy.

That leaves two: Newcastle’s new number nine left an indelible mark on St James’ Park on Sunday with that goal on debut, whilst Juan Mata almost punched a hole in Manchester United’s net with his delicious volley at Stamford Bridge.

1. Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu (Ghana v Guinea, February 1, 2012)

2. Frazier Campbell (Sunderland v Norwich, February 1, 2012)

3. Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast v Equitorial Guinea, February 4, 2012)

4. Hugo Viana (Braga v Portimonense, February 4, 2012)

5. Thiago Carleto (Fluminense v Duque de Caxias, February 4, 2012)

6. Alexandre Oliveira (Londrina v Iraty, February 4, 2012)

7. Lucho Gonzalez (FC Porto v Vitoria Setubal, February 5, 2012)

8. Rodrigo Palacio (Genoa v Lazio, February 5, 2012)

9. Papiss Demba Cisse (Newcastle v Aston Villa, February 5, 2012)

10. Juan Mata (Chelsea v Manchester United, February 5, 2012)

January 30th, 2012

Monday equals the best goals of the week.

The list kicks off with a 70-yard stunner (ok, we know the ball was moving but we also don’t care!) that went viral in the past seven days, followed by that goal from the Clasico that almost punched a hole in Iker Casillas’ net.

The FA Cup delivered a super volley in the Wear-Tees derby at spot six, a terrific goal from a former Real Madrid and Liverpool midfielder lit up Cyprus at number seven, while an outstanding long-range half-volley from Serie A rocked up at position eight.

That left two: a stunning set play from Zlatan, and finally one of the goals of the season from a little known striker from Bolivia.

We start with an omission from last week; Tal Ben Haim’s (Maccabi Petah Tikva, not the Pompey defender!) wonder solo goal versus Hapoel Rishon Lezion from last weekend in the Israeli top flight.

Back to the present, a put-it-on-a-postage-stamp golazo from Inter’s legendary right back starts our top ten, and that’s followed by a wonder-strike from Robbie Keane against the club who gave him his initial big break at spot two.

A fabulous lob from the Rojiblancos’ star centre-forward rolls in a number three, a tremendous free-kick from Loftus Road makes the list at four, and the halfway point is occupied by a brilliant half-volley from the resurgent Black Cats.

An ex-Pensioner now plying his trade in Turkey kicked off the second half of the list, followed by the long-ranger of the week from Portugal.

That leaves three: the goal that should have earned Tottenham a point at Eastlands from Sunday, yet another who needs teammates goal from the greatest footballer on the planet, and finally the goal of the weekend from the Coupe De France.

Vote on your top goal of the week below and, as is custom, sit back and enjoy!

Most corners of the planet are represented in this week’s top 10.

We kick off with a delightful long-ranger from Portugal, followed by a two-for-one-helping of Malaysian golazos including a stunner scored directly from a corner.

Italian football takes over with goals three and four, which highlights two fabulous dead-ball specialists plying their trade in Europe’s boot-shaped peninsula.

Moving to Iberia another wonder free-kick pops up at spot five, whilst England’s long-range goal of the week resides as number six.

The styles of golazos on offer this week is mixed up by goal seven, which provides a superbly cheeky backheel from last week’s Copa Del Rey action.

That leaves three: more dead-ball brilliance (this time from Brazil), our acrobatic entry of the week from the Arab world appears at spot nine, and the list is closed by an outstanding volley from the second division in France.

Vote: Top 10 Goals from Christmas & New Year

January 9th, 2012

As football spun out of control during the Christmas and New Year period we decided to hold off on our usual top goals of the week list, but time has now come to highlight the best netbusters during the holiday season.

A cheeky backheel from the beginning of the festive season gets the list up and running, and on the subject of running, goal two provides a sublime solo stunner from the biggest name to emerge from Chilean football since the likes of Salas and Zamarano.

Arabic football, not constricted by the Christian calendar, continued it’s football schedule unabated over the past few weeks and duly served up some crackers. That included a wonderful give-go-and-chip goal from Egypt at spot three, and a terrific goal from the halfway-line at number four.

The long-range rippers were also in fashion in Scotland (goal 5), whilst the over in England the notion of scoring from distance was given a whole new meaning by US keeper Tim Howard.

The 3rd round of the FA Cup had a selection of sparkling moments over the weekend that included a golazo from Oldham at Anfield, a jaw-droppingly good goal on the turn at Macclesfield, and a but magnifique from one of Newcastle’s French imports.

The list ends off in Italy, where a 20-year-old defender opened his San Siro account with a goal he’ll remember throughout his career.

Vote on your top goal of the week below and, as is custom, sit back and enjoy!

1. Dimitar Berbatov (Fulham v Manchester United, December 22, 2011)

2. Eduardo Vargas (Universidad de Chile v Cobreloa, December 30, 2011)

8. Arnaud Mendy (Macclesfield v Bolton, January 7, 2012)

9. Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle v Blackburn, January 7, 2012)

Vote: Top 10 Goals of 2011

January 1st, 2012

What makes an overhead-volley better than a top corner tomahawk? What makes a solo stunner better than a belter from the halfway-line? Who knows, and for that reason we’ve opted to let you decide.

As 2012 begins, thoughts and conclusions over the last twelve months dominate discussion. Within that framework the question begs what was the best goal of 2011?

So we’ve trawled through the annals, ignored all the mainstream chatter, and hand-picked what we believe are the top ten strikes vying for the top honour.

Factors that influenced those that made the cut included the importance of the match, how memorable that goal was, the style of the strike, and whether the goal was something out of the ordinary.

Moreover, unlike FIFA and the many other websites trying to solve the same puzzle, here at 101 Great Goals we thought it best to wait for 2011 to actually finish before putting our list out to the public.

Thanks to everyone on Twitter and Facebook who got in touch with their suggestions (be sure to join those groups if you haven’t already!).

Vote on your top goal of the 2011 below, and, as is custom, please sit back and enjoy!

1. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United v Manchester City, February 12, 2011)

Vote: Top 10 Goals of the Week

December 19th, 2011

With Christmas just around the corner, and the need to go present shopping growing daily, the chances to miss football over the last few days have been magnified. Accordingly, we take it upon ourselves to recap you with the top ten goals of the week.

The next great thing to come out of Brazil got the list off and running with a solo belter at the Club World Cup, while the club international arena proved the backdrop for a Spurs youngster to curl home a beauty at number two.

The longest goal of the week was scored in the second division in Holland fills spot three, a sweet-as-you-like volley sits at four, and a left-footed sizzler from Scotland bring us to the halfway mark.

The two best players in the world take their places at numbers six and seven. Ronaldo went the solo route with an unstoppable thumper, compared to Messi’s opener in the Club World Cup final that was the product of Xavi’s sublime control in the build up.

That leaves three, and all are acrobatic. We have an incredible overhead volley from Serie A, another incredible bicycle-kick from the second division in Spain, and the Spanish Segunda division also closed out our list with a juggling/scissors-kick golazo.

Vote on your top goal of the week below and, as is custom, sit back and enjoy!

1. Neymar (Santos v Kashiwa Reysol, December 14, 2011)

2. Andros Townsend (Shamrock Rovers v Tottenham, December 15, 2011)

Vote: Top 10 Goals of the Week

December 12th, 2011

As a new week begins, Monday affords us the opportunity to round up the top ten goals from the last week of world football.

While the Clasico was the big story of Saturday night, earlier in the week Barcelona’s kids pushed aside BATE Borisov in the Champions League with Pedro netting the goal of the game. Staying in Europe’s premier club competition, spot two serves up OM’s thrilling winner at Dortmund, which was one of the goals of the Champions League group stages.

Moving to the other side of the globe, Bolivian football supplied a mouthwatering scissors-kick at number three, while the Argentinean top flight produced a solo stunner at position four.

Marking the halfway point in our list is that volley from RVP, followed by a direct curling corner from the Bundesliga on Saturday. Our sole acrobatic entry then appears at spot seven; a terrific overhead-kick from Romania.

That leaves three: a swerving thumper from Milan’s evergreen playmaker, a jaw-dropping volley that stunned Borussia Dortmund, and finally a long-range howitzer from the Spanish second division.

As always, you can get involved by voting at the bottom of this post.

Otherwise you know the drill: sit back and enjoy!

1. Pedro (Barcelona v BATE Borisov, December 6, 2011)

2. Mathieu Valbuena (Borussia Dortmund v Marseille, December 6, 2011)

3. Gualberto Mojica Olmos (Oriente Petrolero v Guabira, December 8, 2011)

4. Diego Morales (Tigre v Velez Sarsfield, December 8, 2011)

5. Robin van Persie (Arsenal v Everton, December 10, 2011)

6. Christian Clemens (Cologne v Freiburg, December 10, 2011) (pictured)

7. Mihai Costea (Steaua Bucharest v CFR Cluj, December 10, 2011)

8. Clarence Seedorf (Bologna v AC Milan, December 11, 2011)
