Porto put an end to Sporting’s CL hopes; Braga claim 3rd; Benfica win

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

FC Porto 2 – Sporting Lisbon 0 (Liga Sagres, May 5, 2012) Champions Porto won their final home game 2-0 against nine-man Sporting in an entertaining Classico, with Hulk’s brace the difference. The loss sees the Lions fail in their late surge for a Champions League spot.

Benfica 1 – Uniao Leiria 0 (Liga Sagres, May 5, 2012) Bruno Cesar grabbed the only goal of the match with a 21st minute free kick, as Benfica sealed 2nd place and Leiria were relegated tonight in front of the half-empty Estadio da Luz.

Braga 1 – Beira Mar 0 (Liga Sagres, May 5, 2012) Braga’s nerves were eased ten minutes into the second half, when former Sporting midfielder Custodio put the home side ahead. That proved sufficient for the Arsenalistas, who with the victory guarantee their place in the Champions League qualifying rounds next season.

Feirense 1 – Vitoria Guimaraes 3 (Liga Sagres, May 5, 2012) A pair of late strikes from Urreta and Soudani handed Guimaraes the points.

Nacional 3 – Gil Vicente 1 (Liga Sagres, May 5, 2012) Hugo Vieira gave the away side the lead on 36 minutes, but Claudemir levelled for the home side in first half stoppage time, and Keita put the home side ahead with 20 minutes remaining. Rondon added the third moments before full time.

Pacos Ferreira 2 – Rio Ave 2 (Liga Sagres, May 5, 2012) Joao Tomas’ fourteenth strike of the season put Rio Ave ahead early at Pacos, but Benfica loanee Melgarejo levelled the scores shortly before the half hour mark – the promising Paraguayan’s eleventh of the campaign. A frantic finale saw Alvarez net for the home side, only for Tomas to pop with a last-minute equaliser, which was enough to guarantee Rio Ave top-flight football next season.

Academica Coimbra 1 – Vitoria Setubal 0 (Liga Sagres, May 5, 2012) Edinho opened the scoring shortly before half time, and it proved enough to lift them out of the relegation zone.
