February 18th, 2010

Liverpool 1 - Unirea Urziceni 0 (Europa League final-32 first-leg, February 18, 2010) Another disappointing performance from Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool in Europe this season was rescued in the 81st minute with a goal from David Ngog after substitutes Babel and Pacheco had combined.

Fulham 2 - Shakhtar Donetsk 1 (Europa League final-32 first-leg, February 18, 2010) Zoltan Gera profited from some Fabianski-esque goalkeeping to put Fulham in front after only three minutes. Luiz Adriano equalised just after the half hour with a smooth finish after rounding Schwarzer. Bobby Zamora smashed home the winner on 63 and the Cottagers can now travel to the Ukraine in good heart.

Panathinaikos 3 - Roma 2 (Europa League final-32 first-leg, February 18, 2010) Mirko Vucinic scored one of the goals of the week - a classic right foot curler from the edge of the box - to put Roma ahead at Panathinaikos. Late goals from Christodoulopoulos and Djobril Cisse gave the Greek giants hope for the return in Italy.

Atletico Madrid 1 - Galatasaray 1 (Europa League final-32 first-leg, February 18, 2010) Atletico Madrid continued where they left off against Barcelona, Jose Antonio Reyes scoring a stunning left footed free-kick against Galatasaray. Kader Keita equalised with thirteen minutes remaining.

Hertha Berlin 1 - Benfica 1 (Europa League final-32 first-leg, February 18, 2010) Angel Di Maria added to his growing reputation with Benfica’s opener at Hertha Berlin, a Javi Garcia og levelled things up for the struggling Bundesliga side.

Ajax 1 - Juventus 2 (Europa League final-32 first-leg, February 18, 2010) Miralem Sulejmani powered down the left hand side and fired Ajax in front on 16 minutes, just after the half hour Amauri equalised with a powerful header. Amauri grabbed his third goal in two games with another header just before the hour to put Juve seemingly in control of the tie.

Lille 2 - Fenerbahce 1 (Europa League final-32 first-leg, February 18, 2010) Florent Balmont fired Lille into the lead from a tight angle at home to Fenerbahce after just three minutes. Late drama saw Ivan Marcano sent off for the home side for pulling down Grafite who claimed Wolfsburg’s second from the penalty spot only for Marco Ruben to equalise.

Rubin Kazan 3 - Hapoel Tel Aviv 0 (Europa League final-32 first-leg, February 18, 2010) After struggling from the off on a freezing night in Kazan (early Rubin chances here and here), the Israelis fell behind to the reigning Russian champs Rubin after 14 minutes when a ball over the top was brilliantly controlled by Aleksandr Bukharov, his first touch lifting the ball majestically over Walid Badir, before the forward rounded the keeper and finished into an empty net. Hapoel continued to struggle in the ice-cold temperatures, Bukharov had a goal chalked off while Semak tested keeper Enyeama. And it was no surprise when Kazan doubled their lead in the 23rd minute when a mistake in the visitors backline was exploited by Aleksandr Bukharov volleying in his second of the game. (First half highlights here.) Hapoel failed to play much better after the break, and it was no surprise when Rubin added a third in the 69th minute as Sergey Semak claimed a goal his performance richly deserved.

***

Melbourne Victory 2 - Sydney FC 1 (A-League Major Semi-Final first-leg, February 18, 2010) The Victory netted through Nik Mrdja and Carlos Hernandez before John Aloisi’s shot just prior to halftime deflected off Kevin Muscat to peg one back for Sydney. February 17th, 2010

Porto 2 - Arsenal 1 (Champions League, February 17, 2010) (Longer ITV highlights here.) Arsenal started badly in Porto finding themselves under the cosh from the get-go, Hulk dragging a shot wide after just two minutes. The Gunners were made to look silly in the 11th minute when Silvestre Varela skipped past Clichy down the right and whacked a cross goalwards that stand-in keeper Lukasz Fabianski horribly turned into his own net. Arsenal grabbed the crucial away goal in the 16th minute from the most unlikely source. Vermaelen flicked on a Nasri corner to the back post, Rosicky knocked the ball back into the mixer, and Sol Campbell was perfectly placed to nod the ball over the line. (First half highlights here.) Arsenal conceded a bizarre goal at the start of the second half to caused by Campbell’s needless touch on the ball that Fabianski stupidly picked up to give away an indirect free-kick. Porto took it quickly and Raul Meireles touched the ball to Falcao who scored. Cesc Fabregas appeared to be hit by a missile when trying to take corner.

After the game a clearly irate Arsene Wenger and Cesc Fabregas gave their thoughts on Arsenal’s defeat.

Bayern Munich 2 - Fiorentina 1 (Champions League, February 17, 2010) (Longer ITV highlights here.) Bayern took the lead against Fiorentina on the stroke of halftime courtesy of an Arjen Robben penalty - the Dutchman’s sixth goal in six consecutive games. The Viola bagged a crucial away goal at the start of the second half to equalise, poor Bayern defending allowed a corner to go unchallenged into their box and Per Kroldrup helped himself to the charity and slotted the ball home. In the 89th minute Bayern netted a crucial but controversial winner as Robben’s long-range shot was parried out to Olic who nodded a ball onto an offside Miroslav Klose to head in.

Plymouth 1 - Swansea 1 (Championship, February 16, 2010 )Darren Pratley had given the away side the lead just after halftime when he slotted beneath David Stockdale. ***

Lorient 1 - Bordeaux 4 (Coupe De La Ligue, February 17, 2010) Laurent Koscielny handed Lorient a 12th minute lead over Bordeaux in the cup, bundling the ball in the net after Les Girondins made a hash of clearing their lines from a corner. Koscielny then turned from hero to zero as the centre half was sent off for bringing down Marouane Chamakh in the box and Wendel made no mistake from the spot. In the 28th minute Arsenal-bound (?) striker Marouane Chamakh put the visitors into the lead with a brilliant header from the edge of the box that looped into the far top corner. Wendel wrapped up the win with a brilliant free-kick 10 minutes from time, Yoan Gouffran netted a fourth at the death.

February 16th, 2010

AC Milan 2 - Manchester United 3 (Champions League, February 16, 2010) (Longer highlights here and Sky Sports highlights here.) Ronaldinho sent the San Siro into raptures after just two minutes against United, Patrice Evra failed with an acrobatic clearance from a Beckham free-kick and Dinho wellied a deflected volley past Van der Sar. United look shellshocked after falling behind, and Ronaldinho almost capitalised with a mesmerising run past Ferdinand only for the bucked-tooth wonder to fall in the box and the ref waved play on. Ten minutes from the break United netted the crucial equaliser as Fletcher whipped in a cross from the right that Paul Scholes missed on the volley but directed into the far corner off his standing leg. David Beckham wasted an opportunity to hit the target with a free-kick from the edge of the United D. (First half highlights here.) Midway through the half, after Rooney had already found his shooting boots, United grabbed a tie-changing second. Valencia, who just came off the bench, raced down the right and sent a cross over to the right where Wayne Rooney rose high to head the ball into the far post. In the 74th minute United sealed a famous night in Milan claiming a third again a forlorn Rossoneri, Fletcher all too easily lofted a ball into the heart of the home area and Wayne Rooney ghosted in to head in his second of the game. With the home crowd heading for the exits sub Clarence Seedorf gave Milan a lifeline scoring with a cheeky backheel after Ronaldinho had worked the space down the left. The match end on a sour note for United as Michael Carrick picked up a needless red card.

Wayne Rooney’s post match interview can be seen here, Sir Alex Ferguson’s here and David Beckham’s interview here.

Neville freed Tim Cahill in the box, the Australian pull faked out his covering defender with a classy backheel and Steven Pienaar was on hand to apply the finishing touch. Sporting threatened after going behind when Marat Izmailov hit a fierce shot against Howard’s post. In Everton’s first attack after the restart they expose Sporting’s weak underbelly as Cahill challenged keeper Rui Patricio from a corner, the cross missed them both both striking an unmarked Sylvin Distin helplessly turned the ball in the net. But after coasting much of the match Everton shot themselves in the foot six minutes from time, Distin was the villain gifting possession to Leidson who he then brought down in the box and, after Distin saw red, Miguel Veloso converted from the spot.

***

Four minutes from time City equalised, Adebayor got a flick-on in the box and Gareth Barry scored at the second attempt after his first effort hit the post. Stoke were denied an injury time winner when Ryan Shawcross had a header ruled out for a nonsense foul on Shay Given.
