All the goals from Tuesday night’s action in the Champions League can be seen here.
Arsenal 1 - Dynamo Kiev 0 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) After a goalless first half (highlights here) it looked as if Arsenal were going to fail to score once again. But the Gunners stole the three points with three minutes left as new captain Cesc Fabregas released Nicklas Bendtner, who ran through and fired home into the near post. Kiev had Aliyev sent off at the death.
Villarreal 0 - Manchester United 0 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Robert Pires teed up Santi Carzola for an early effort on Kuszczak’s goal, while United’s best chance of the opening 45 came when Rooney’s cushioned pass down to Ronaldo was thumped on target from 30-yards out, but Diego Lopez pushed the ball onto the bar. (First half highlights here.) After the break Rooney had a shot saved on the turn, and Joan Capdevila was sent off for a seemingly harmless foul on Ronaldo, as neither side could score. United qualify from the group.
Aalborg 2 - Celtic 1 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) After a goalless first half (highlights here), Celtic had a good shout for a penalty waved away when Scott McDonald was brought down in the box. But the Scots continued to press, taking a crucial away lead (their first away goal in almost two years) when Barry Robson headed a Mark Wilson cross past Zaza. The lead wasn’t held for long as the hosts equalised when Caca’s 30-yard shot deflected off Stephen McManus and looped over Artur Boruc. Celtic’s nightmare was sealed three minutes from time with Gary Caldwell turning a cross into his own net and ending their European journey.
BATE Borisov 0 - Real Madrid 1 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) After Drenthe and Saviola linked up for a near miss early doors, Real Madrid took the lead at BATE as Drenthe’s next cross picked out Raul and the number 7 smashed home via the underside of the bar.
Fiorentina 1 - Lyon 2 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) Fiorentina, needing a win to keep their Champions League hopes alive, got off to the worse possible start against Lyon with Benzema teeing up Jean Makoun for the opener. And the Frenchman silenced the Stadio Artemio Franchi by building a two-goal advantage through a wonderful low drive from talisman Karim Benzema. But on the stroke of halftime the Viola stormed back into the game, a delicious Montolivio cross was headed home by Alberto Gilardino.
Fenerbahce 1 - Porto 2 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) Porto’s bid to seal qualification from group G got off to a flyer as Lisandro Lopez volleyed home a Bruno Alves cross after Volkan flapped the high ball. And Lopez quickly doubled the lead tucking home despite a clear handball in the build-up. Fener pulled a goal back in fortuitous circumstances as Colin Kazim-Richards’ shot deflected off Alves and sailed over the keeper.
Bayern Munich 3 - Steaua Bucharest 0 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) Bayern had to wait almost an hour to take the lead over Steaua, Oddo’s cross was flicked on by Ribery with Miroslav Klose steering the ball over the line. Bayern added a second four minutes later, Ribery’s ball in-field was headed on by Klose to Luca Toni, who finished. And the blitz was continued by Klose who bagged his second with a toe-poke in the box.
Zenit St. Petersburg 0 - Juventus 0 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) In the early kick-off in Russia, Juve had the first real opportunity to score as Olof Mellberg headed against the outside of the post from Camoranesi’s free-kick. And Juve hit the woodwork for the second time later in the half, Nedved played in Del Piero who in turn found Iaquinta, but his shot could only find the upright. Tymoschuk’s free-kick was the closet Zenit came in the opening 45. The chances kept coming after the break, Del Piero forced a great save for Juve, and Danny came close for Zenit on a couple of occasions but in the end neither side could find a breakthrough.

Norwich 1 - Crystal Palace 2 (Championship, November 25, 2008) A Craig Beattie strike and a fine John Oster chip gave Palace a two goal lead at Carrow Road. The hosts pulled one back with Matthew Pattison nodding in Lee Croft’s cross. (Apologies for the quality of the video.)
Northampton 2 - Leeds 1 (League One, November 25, 2008) Liam Davis hit a beauty on the turn to give the hosts the lead. Red-hot Jermaine Beckford chalked up his 19th goal of the season to level. But Northampton claimed the points as Danny Jackman late corner was headed home by Nicholas Bignall.

Wigan 1 - Everton 0 (Premier League, November 24, 2008) After an entertaining but goalless first half at the JJB, Steve Bruce brought on Henri Camara from the bench and the substitution pay instant dividends as Valencia was released down the right, cut inside and fed Camara for his first Premier League goal since December 2006.
***
Vitoria Setubal 2 - Belenenses 0 (Superliga, November 24, 2008) Anderson gave the hosts the lead on the stroke of halftime when his free-kick evaded everyone to nestle in the corner. Elias killed the game off in the last minute.

Hapoel Tel Aviv 2 - Maccabi Tel Aviv 0 (Ligat ha’Al, November 24, 2008) Maharan Lala did most of the damage for Hapoel, first setting up Samuel Yeboah in the 59th minute and then scoring his team’s second with a precision shot seven minutes later.

With none of the top five clubs in the Premier League managing to hit the back of net last weekend, there is only one goal from England’s top flight represented in our list this week.
And it was a difficult week for some related to the English game, with a flurry of defensive gaffs gifting cheap goals in the past seven days. Thankfully the Three Lions’ win in Berlin airbrushed out from the memory the calamitous manikin impressions employed by John Terry and Scott Carson, while Gael Clichy and Mikel Silvestre were guilty of unwarranted slapstick comedy as they ran into each other to allow Stephen Ireland to score.
A slew of keepers also seemed to forget how to use their hands this week, with Feyenoord’s Henk Timmer, Real Betis’ Ricardo and Lazio’s Rubinho suffering from terrible momentary bouts of crappykeeperitus. But the booby-prize for the worst number 1 of the week falls on Bordeaux’s stand-in keeper Mathieu Valverde, who demonstrated that however bad a goalie may be with their hands, they are probably worse with their feet.
This week’s selection has a large helping of set-plays, with goals 2, 6, 9, 10 and 13 all arriving from dead-ball situations. Goal 13 also doubles up as one of the best strikes of the week, with goals 12 and 4 running very close behind. Outside the top list, many will have noticed that Partizan’s sought-out starlet Adem Ljajic broke his duck with a beauty this weekend.
As always, sit back and enjoy!
1. Toni Kroos (v Italy U21, Nov. 18, 2008)
2. Reto Ziegler (v Finland, Nov. 19, 2008)
3. Maicon (v Portugal, Nov. 19, 2008)
4. Elano (v Portugal, Nov. 19, 2008)

UPDATE: This post has been up for just a few minutes and the corrections are flooding in. First, thanks to “Glen Johnson” for reminding us of his superb 25-yarder against Hull which should also be included in our top goals (watch here, 5.30 mins in).
Further, thanks to “frederikerne” for pointing out Peter ‘Magic’ Madsen’s flamboyant finish in Brondby’s 6-nil thrashing of Sonderjyske.
