Golazos galore as Ghana draw 1-1 with Guinea

Ghana 1 – Guinea 1 (Africa Cup of Nations, February 1, 2012) Ghana took the lead when a corner was sent to Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu who flicked the ball up and volleyed it into the top corner from 22 yards. Guinea levelled on the stroke of halftime as a speculative cross from Abdoul Camara arched over the Ghana goalie and into the far top corner.

Gabon edge Tunisia as both nations qualify for the quarters

Gabon 1 – Tunisia 0 (Africa Cup of Nations, January 31, 2012) Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang maintained his fine form at AFCON breaking the ice just after the hour with a strike that evaded Tunisia keeper Jridi, who should have done better.

Morocco beat Niger before both nations exit AFCON

Niger 0 – Morocco 1 (Africa Cup of Nations, January 31, 2012) A strange incident played out in the 40th minute as Moroccan midfielder Houssine Kharja hit out at his own physio before being subbed for Hermach. Morocco broke the deadlock 11 minutes from time as Younes Belhanda found the net following an assist from Chamakh.

Eboue & Bony steers the Ivorians past Angola

Ivory Coast 2 – Angola 0 (Africa Cup of Nations, January 30, 2012) Emmanuel Eboue tapped the Ivorians 1-up in the 33rd minute after Angolan defender Miguel failed to clear a Wilfried Bony cross. The Elephants went 2-nil up in the 64th minute as Wilfried Bony cashed in on yet more poor defending from Angola after a lovely cross from Kader Keita.

Mudathir makes Sudanese history as the Falcons of Jediane qualify for the AFCON quarters

Sudan 2 – Burkina Faso 1 (Africa Cup of Nations, January 30, 2012) Sudan striker Mudathir El-Tahir burst through the Burkina Faso backline just after the half hour to break the deadlock. Sudan, who have their entire squad playing domestically, completely an incredible passage to the quarters when Mudathir El-Tahir netted his brace ten minutes from time. Moumouni Dagano header at the death prove little consolation for Burkina Faso.

Libya stun Senegal before bowing out of AFCON

Libya 2 – Senegal 1 (Africa Cup of Nations, January 29, 2012) Ihaab Boussefi fired Libya into a fifth minute shock lead, however Senegal were soon back on level terms courtesy of a Deme N’Diaye header from a corner. Abu Saifi earned Libya their first win of the tournament with a fine volley in the 84th.

Gyan & Ayew secure Ghana a 2-0 win over Mali

Ghana 2 – Mali 0 ( Africa Cup of Nations, January 28, 2012) Asamoah Gyan scored a terrific free-kick for Ghana’s opener. Thirteen minutes later Andre Ayew sealed the win with a fine individual goal, finishing at the near post.

Guinea smash 6 past Botswana

Botswana 1 – Guinea 6 (Africa Cup on Nations, January 28, 2012) Abdoulaye Sadio opened the scoring for Guinea on 15 and an equaliser from the penalty spot by Dipsy Selolwane was just a brief respite for Botswana. Goals from Sadio again, Abdoul Camara, Ibrahima Traore, Mamadou Bah and Naby Soumah completed the rout.

Gabon 3 – Morocco 2 (Africa Cup of Nations, January 26, 2012) Fiorentina’s Houssine Kharja executed a neat turn and shot in the 28th minute to fire Morocco ahead. The match had a spectacular finish as Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang and the Daniel Cousin scored twice in two minutes to give Gabon the lead with 10 minutes left. Yet more drama was to come as Morocco won an injury time penalty for a handball which Houssine Kharja dispatched for 2-2.  And yet more was to come (!) as in the seventh minute of injury time Bruno Zita curled home a Beckham-esque free-kick golazo on the angle to hand Gabon one of the great wins in AFCON history.
