PSG 2 - Racing Santander 2 (UEFA Cup, November 27, 2008) Mateja Kezman put the home side ahead after really rubbish defending from Santander. Santander pulled one back eight minutes later through an og from Sammy Traore and Gonzalo Ruiz Colsa completed the comeback with a stunning strike, his first goal of the campaign.
Partizan Belgrade 0 - Standard Liege 1 (UEFA Cup, November 27, 2008) A full-length diving header from Igor De Camargo won the game for the Belgian side.

Braga 2 - Wolfsburg 3 (UEFA Cup, November 27, 2008) An own goal from Andrea Barzagli gave the home side the lead following a passage of play that more resembled pinball than the beautiful game. All the goals from Wednesday’s action in the Champions League can be seen here.
Bordeaux 1 - Chelsea 1 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) Petr Cech made a smart save to deny Mathieu Chalme’s fierce right-footed shot after 20 minutes in Bordeaux. In a goalless opening 45, one of the highlights was some sublime juggling and ball skills from Yoann Gourcuff. The Blues made the breakthrough on the hour mark, Frank Lampard released Nicolas Anelka whose pace took him through on goal where he finished expertly. But just as it looked as if Chelsea would claim the three points, Alou Diarra headed an equaliser seven minutes from time.
Liverpool 1 - Marseille 0 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) After dominating the opening exchanges with Marseille, Liverpool moved ahead when Steven Gerrard was gifted too much space to head in Xabi Alonso’s deep cross. The visitors came close to an equaliser but Taye Taiwo’s rasping 30-yard free-kick could only find the post. The Reds began to lose concentration around the hour mark, gifting Marseille three opportunities to find an equaliser. The match ended on a sour note after the sides had a push and a shove following a Mascherano foul.
Sporting Lisbon 2 - Barcelona 5 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.)Â Xavi gave Sporting an early warning sign by smashing a free-kick onto the bar. The hosts failed to take heed, and soon found themselves behind when Thierry Henry struck after great work from Lionel Messi. And the second was soon in following, Gerard Pique bundling the ball over the line from a corner. After the break Lionel Messi added the killer third, Barca took a lightning quick free-kick on the edge of the box and the tiny Argentine slotted home. Things then spiced up when Miguel Veloso (curling free-kick) and then Liedson (fine finish) scored two quick goals for the hosts. But hopes of a comeback were dashed when Marco Caneira acrobatically put through his own net, and sub-Bojan scored a fifth from the spot for Barca.
Inter Milan 0 - Panathinaikos 1 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Panathinaikos survived an early scare at the San Siro when Adriano’s shot hit the outside of the post. Zlatan came with a whisker from finding the net, lifting his shot just over the bar from Cambiasso’s through-ball. Pana threatened Cesar’s goal when Junior Simao fired narrowly wide at the start of the second half. And the form book went out the window when Josu Sarriegi stabbed the Greeks into the lead to stun Mourinho’s Inter.
CFR Cluj 1 - Roma 3 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.)Â Cluj, whose Champions League hopes have sunk fast, conceded an early goal to group leaders Roma, Matteo Brighi finding the net from Simone Perrotta’s cross. Roma’s lead was soon doubled as captain fantastic, Francesco Totti, struck home a perfect free-kick. But Cluj pulled themselves back into the game when Yssouf Kone scored on the rebound after Doni only parried Pereira’s tame shot. After the break Roma restored their two goal cushion, Rodrigo Taddei teeing up Brighi for his second of the night.
Atletico Madrid 2 - PSV 1 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) At an empty Vicente Calderon Stadium, Atletico made home advantage count against PSV as Simao bagged the opener after scuffing his initial shot. And the Dutch fell further behind when poor defending from a corner allowed Maxi Rodriguez to rocket home the second. The break appeared to allow PSV to refocus, and on the restart they got back in the match when Danny Koevermans scored from a scrappy corner.
Shakhtar Donetsk 5 - Basel 0 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) As he did in Switzerland, Jadson breached the Basel backline with a cool side-footed effort to give Shaktar the lead. Willian made it 2-0 five minutes after the interval, before Jadson scored two goals in eight minutes and second-half substitute Yevgen Seleznyov completed the rout in the 75th. Shakhtar qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Anorthosis 2 - Werder Bremen 2 (Champions League, November 26, 2008) (Longer highlights here.)Â The hosts pulled ahead in the 62nd minute when Nikos Nikolaou struck a sweet half-volley, low past Werder’s stand-in keeper Christian Vander. And Anorthosis scored a second in the 68th minute when a sweeping attack was finished by Savio. But Werder rallied, first through a Diego penalty before Hugo Almeida struck a low volley to equalise.

All the goals from Tuesday night’s action in the Champions League can be seen here.
Arsenal 1 - Dynamo Kiev 0 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) After a goalless first half (highlights here) it looked as if Arsenal were going to fail to score once again. But the Gunners stole the three points with three minutes left as new captain Cesc Fabregas released Nicklas Bendtner, who ran through and fired home into the near post. Kiev had Aliyev sent off at the death.
Villarreal 0 - Manchester United 0 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Robert Pires teed up Santi Carzola for an early effort on Kuszczak’s goal, while United’s best chance of the opening 45 came when Rooney’s cushioned pass down to Ronaldo was thumped on target from 30-yards out, but Diego Lopez pushed the ball onto the bar. (First half highlights here.) After the break Rooney had a shot saved on the turn, and Joan Capdevila was sent off for a seemingly harmless foul on Ronaldo, as neither side could score. United qualify from the group.
Aalborg 2 - Celtic 1 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) After a goalless first half (highlights here), Celtic had a good shout for a penalty waved away when Scott McDonald was brought down in the box. But the Scots continued to press, taking a crucial away lead (their first away goal in almost two years) when Barry Robson headed a Mark Wilson cross past Zaza. The lead wasn’t held for long as the hosts equalised when Caca’s 30-yard shot deflected off Stephen McManus and looped over Artur Boruc. Celtic’s nightmare was sealed three minutes from time with Gary Caldwell turning a cross into his own net and ending their European journey.
BATE Borisov 0 - Real Madrid 1 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) After Drenthe and Saviola linked up for a near miss early doors, Real Madrid took the lead at BATE as Drenthe’s next cross picked out Raul and the number 7 smashed home via the underside of the bar.
Fiorentina 1 - Lyon 2 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) Fiorentina, needing a win to keep their Champions League hopes alive, got off to the worse possible start against Lyon with Benzema teeing up Jean Makoun for the opener. And the Frenchman silenced the Stadio Artemio Franchi by building a two-goal advantage through a wonderful low drive from talisman Karim Benzema. But on the stroke of halftime the Viola stormed back into the game, a delicious Montolivio cross was headed home by Alberto Gilardino.
Fenerbahce 1 - Porto 2 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) Porto’s bid to seal qualification from group G got off to a flyer as Lisandro Lopez volleyed home a Bruno Alves cross after Volkan flapped the high ball. And Lopez quickly doubled the lead tucking home despite a clear handball in the build-up. Fener pulled a goal back in fortuitous circumstances as Colin Kazim-Richards’ shot deflected off Alves and sailed over the keeper.
Bayern Munich 3 - Steaua Bucharest 0 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) Bayern had to wait almost an hour to take the lead over Steaua, Oddo’s cross was flicked on by Ribery with Miroslav Klose steering the ball over the line. Bayern added a second four minutes later, Ribery’s ball in-field was headed on by Klose to Luca Toni, who finished. And the blitz was continued by Klose who bagged his second with a toe-poke in the box.
Zenit St. Petersburg 0 - Juventus 0 (Champions League, November 25, 2008) In the early kick-off in Russia, Juve had the first real opportunity to score as Olof Mellberg headed against the outside of the post from Camoranesi’s free-kick. And Juve hit the woodwork for the second time later in the half, Nedved played in Del Piero who in turn found Iaquinta, but his shot could only find the upright. Tymoschuk’s free-kick was the closet Zenit came in the opening 45. The chances kept coming after the break, Del Piero forced a great save for Juve, and Danny came close for Zenit on a couple of occasions but in the end neither side could find a breakthrough.

Manchester City 3 - Twente 2 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) It was a blistering start at Eastlands with Shaun Wright-Phillips striking after just two minutes, bursting through the middle and finding the net from inside the box. Twente equalised when Eljero Elia collected a poor header from Richard Dunne before racing through and beating Joe Hart. In the 56th minute Robinho hit a pearler into the top corner to regain the lead. And Benjani, returning to the team from injury, took just three minutes to settle in, seeing his shot deflect into the bottom corner. Wielaert immediately replied with a header, leading to a frantic finish in which Robinho hit the post twice.
Tottenham 4 - Dinamo Zagreb 0 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) The ‘Arry Redknapp revolution continues. Darren Bent scored two in three minutes just after the half hour. Tom Huddlestone added a terrific third, volleying home a Bentley corner (Beckham to Scholes anyone?) and Darren Bent completed his hat-trick with twenty minutes to go.
AC Milan 1 - Braga 0 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) Braga manage to frustrate the Serie A leaders all the way to injury-time, but then Ronaldinho became the match-winner with a blistering strike which ripped into the top corner.
Standard Liege 1 - Sevilla 0 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) After getting his head stuck in a fairground ride, Dieumerci Mbokani got back to business to give Standard Liege the lead over Sevilla with a clinical first-time strike.
Lech Poznan 2 - Nancy 2 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) Slawimir Peszko gave Lech the lead with a superb goal, controlling expertly before firing home the opener after 4 minutes. The Frenchmen were not behind for long, Malonga equalised in the 10th minute with a shot from inside the box, only for Lech to retake the lead in bizarre circumstances. Stilic’s 35-yard free-kick was sent straight through to keeper Bracigliano, but the goalie inexplicably failed to stop the ball crossing the line for a freak goal. In the closing stages Nancy drew level, a slick set of passes eventually fed in Monsef Zerka who finished with aplomb.
Spartak Moscow 1 - Udinese 2 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) Fabio Quagliarella struck after 12 minutes against Moscow, collecting a ball on his chest, spinning and producing a fine finish. Spartak levelled soon after as Rodriguez powered home a shot in the near post. (Both goals here.) The Italians retook the lead on the hour mark when Quagliarella converted a penalty. And despite having Pasquale sent off late on, Udinese hung on for the win.
Stuttgart 2 - Partizan Belgrade 0 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) Stuttgart had to wait until the 76th minute to break the deadlock, a long ball fell into the path of Mario Gomez and the striker hit a beauty past the keeper. Gomez doubled the lead four minutes later, managing to play a one-two off a defender and striking a low drive into the bottom corner.
Metalist Kharkiv 0 - Hertha Berlin 0 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) Metalist dominated the match but failed to make their possession count.
Feyenoord 1 - CSKA Moscow 3 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) CSKA Moscow took the lead with a goal from Berezutski, but the hosts drew level on the half hour as Giovanni van Bronckhorst was released in the box and the veteran produced a calm finish. But van Bronckhorst quickly turned into the villain with a horrible attempt at a headed backpass that allowed Vanger Love to steal in and score. The Dutch were then put to bed nine minutes from time, Vagner Love was allowed (too easily) to wriggle free and fire a weak shot to kill the game.
Ajax 1 - Zilina 0 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) It was pinball in the Zilina penalty area with Luis Suarez the beneficiary giving Ajax the lead.
Benfica 0 - Galatasaray 2 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) After a goalless first half, Emre Asik volleyed Galatasaray in front after finding space in the box. The Turks completed a fine victory after a period of pressure resulted in Karan adding the second.
Racing Santander 1 - Schalke 1 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) Racing Santander’s Mohammed Tchite continued his recent hot streak against Schalke. The Germans were brought back on level terms thanks to a rare goal from Orlando Engelaar.
St Etienne 3 - Rosenborg 0 (UEFA Cup, November 6, 2008) Ilan collected the ball on the top left of the Rosenborg area, and the striker curled a beauty to give St. Etienne the lead. Machado doubled the lead five minutes later with a cute finish after (apparently) beating the offside trap. Mirallas made sure of the points by beating the keeper to a through ball and finding the target from an acute angle.

Celtic 1 - Manchester United 1 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Cristiano Ronaldo saw his early free-kick rise just over the bar, but the mood at Parkhead erupted in the 13th minute as Scott McDonald produced a brilliant finish to lob stand-in United keeper Ben Foster. United cranked up the pressure after the break, Vidic sent a header off target. And after dominating the play for the majority of the second half, United were finally rewarded when Ryan Giggs bundled home a header after Boruc had palmed away Ronaldo’s swerving shot.
Arsenal 0 - Fenerbahce 0 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Robin van Persie missed a hat-trick of first half chances, the third opportunity forcing a fine save from Demirel (who was in inspired form all night). The Gunners continued to have the upper hand in the second half but they couldn’t find the breakthrough despite dominating the possession.
Real Madrid 0 - Juventus 2 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Alessandro Del Piero continued his excellent recent form at the Santiago Bernabeu by firing in a 20-yard low drive to give Juve the lead in Madrid. Sergio Ramos had a glorious chance to cap his return to the first team with an equaliser, but his back-post volley narrowly skied the bar. Ruud van Nistelrooy was the next to miss the target after being released by Guti. Juventus then extended their lead after the break, Iker Casillas lined-up his wall poorly and Alessandro Del Piero was able to pick his spot to the right of the motionless keeper.
Fiorentina 1 - Bayern Munich 1 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Third-place Fiorentina, who were hosting group leaders Bayern Munich needing a win, made a great start as Adrian Mutu volleyed home Zauri’s cross after 10 minutes. Mutu had a wonderful opportunity to double the lead early in the second half, but the Romanian’s free header was sent over the bar. Bayern eventually drew level, Ribery’s through-ball was deflected into the path of Tim Borowski who stroked home the equaliser.
Dynamo Kiev 1 - Porto 2 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Artem Milevskiy’s first-time shot from Aliyev’s pass put Dynamo Kiev ahead against Porto. The Portuguese hit back after the break, Rolando rose powerfully to head home Raul Meireles’ free-kick. Porto snatched a dramatic victory in injury-time, Lopez crossed to Lucho Gonzalez who tucked home the winner, tore off his shirt off and received his second yellow card and marching orders.
BATE Borisov 0 - Zenit St. Petersburg 2 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Zenit seized the first half advantage at BATE through a Pavel Pogrebniak strike from inside the box. A wonderful late solo goal from Miguel Danny, weaving past the static defender before finding the back of the net, sealed victory for Zenit.
Aalborg 2 - Villarreal 2 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Villarreal took a halftime lead at Aalborg after Robert Pires played in Giuseppe Rossi, who cut in from the right and saw his left-footed shot deflect past Zaza in goal. The Yellow Submarine was breached early in the second half, Jeppe Curth levelling for the Danes with a blistering shot after a fine assist from Caca. But the Spaniards replied with a superb goal, Llorente chipped a ball through to Guillermo Franco, who controlled on his chest before scoring on the volley. Aalborg refused to lie down and rallied with the second superb goal of the game, Anders Due curling a free-kick into the top corner.
Lyon 2 - Steaua Bucharest 0 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Steaua fell behind at Lyon as a result of shocking team defending, Juninho fired his free-kick straight through a porous wall, and keeper Zapata failed to stop the shot on the line. Anthony Reveillere sealed the win with a fine second nine minutes from time.

Liverpool 1 - Atletico Madrid 1 (Champions League, November 4, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Liverpool started brightly against Atletico, coming close to scoring after Xabi Alonso’s 60-yard pass was perfectly collected by Robbie Keane before seeing his shot go narrowly wide. But it was the Spaniards who took the lead at Anfield, Antonio Lopez controlled a pass brilliantly down the line, and his cross was converted by Maxi Rodriguez. After the break Daniel Agger came close to restoring parity for the Reds but his header beat Atletico keeper Leo Franco but also the bar. Steven Gerrard played a fine one-two with Keane but the skipper’s effort was off target. But just as it looked like Liverpool were going to lose back-to-back games, Steven Gerrard won the Reds a (soft) penalty which he dispatched into the Kop.
Roma 3 - Chelsea 1 (Champions League, November 4, 2008) (Longer highlights here and extended highlights here.) Christian Panucci continued his fine scoring record this season by giving Roma the lead in their must-win game at home to Chelsea, sending the Olimpico wild turning home Cicinho’s cross. Scolari threw on Drogba at the break, but it was Roma who flew out the traps as Mirko Vucinic smashed home a 20-yard beauty for 2-nil. Chelsea’s defense, which had only conceded four goals all season, were then ripped to pieces by Roma’s third, Vucinic skinned Obi Mikel before expertly beating Cech to send the locals crazy. John Terry (handball) pulled a goal back for Chelsea with 15 minutes to go, but the Blues were dealt a cruel blow when the ref made a poor decision to send off Deco.
Anorthosis Famagusta 3 - Inter Milan 3 (Champions League, November 4, 2008) Inter had an early chance away in Anorthosis, Zlatan forcing a smart save from Beqaj after only two minutes. Mourinho’s charges continued their early pressure by taking the lead, Ibrahimovic’s 35-yard free-kick was poorly dealt with by Beqaj between the sticks and Mario Balotelli was on hand to tap home the rebound. All Inter’s early running was undone on the half hour as Burdisso had a total brain loss dealing with a harmless long ball, the defender guided his header past the advancing Cesar allowing Cedric Bardon the simple task of rolling the ball home. Marco Materazzi regained the lead for Inter, the defender won a strong header from a corner to score. But a crazy opening 45 ended all square, Cambiasso’s attempted headed clearance hit the head of Georgios Panagi and the ball ended up in the net. (First half highlights here.) A game littered with mistakes then saw the hosts take the lead, Burdisso once again was at fault allowing Frousos to score. But Inter found an equaliser through Julio Cruz, who headed home Balotelli’s free-kick.
Barcelona 1 - Basel 1 (Champions League, November 4, 2008) Barca had to wait a surprising hour before breaking the deadlock with pointless Basel, Lionel Messi played a fabulous one-two with Thierry Henry before slotting the ball into the bottom corner. But the Swiss minnows picked up an amazing, unlikely draw when Derdiyok volleyed home a cross to level.
Marseille 3 - PSV 0 (Champions League, November 4, 2008) Marseille scored after half an hour against PSV, Bacary Kone was released through the middle and the striker rounded the keeper to score. The Dutch outfit fell apart in the second half, Mamadou Niang met Kone’s inch-perfect cross on the volley for the second. And Niang sealed the win with the third in the 72nd minute, clinically scoring after being put through from Ben Afra’s pass.
Werder Bremen 0 - Panathinaikos 3 (Champions League, November 4, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Having taken the lead away at Werder Bremen through Mantzios’ fine strike, Panathinaikos scored a stunning second goal to humble the Germans, Giorgos Karagounis collected a throw-in on the left hand side and smacked a wonderful shot into the far corner. (A Steve McManaman versus Arsenal take-off?) The Greeks completed a fine away win thanks to Pasanen’s own goal seven minutes from time.
Sporting Lisbon 1 - Shakhtar Donetsk 0 (Champions League, November 4, 2008) Sporting Lisbon’s playmaker Derlei gave the hosts the lead against Shakhtar Donetsk.
CFR Cluj 1 - Bordeaux 2 (Champions League, November 4, 2008) Yoann Gourcuff opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a scrappy right foot shot past Eduard Stancioiu. Cluj equalised three minutes later when Ricardo Dani planted a fine header, but Bordeaux scored the eventual winner in the 38th when Geraldo Wendel curled a sweet free-kick around the Cluj wall from the edge of the area.
