Wolves 1 – West Brom 5 (Premier League, February 12, 2012) (Alternative highlights) The Baggies were first to strike in the 34th minute when a Peter Odemwingie shot from the edge of the box cut across Hennessey and settled in the far corner. Wolves levelled in stoppage time in the first half as Steven Fletcher started and finished a move that began from a throw-in to get Molineux up on their feet. West Brom retook the lead in the 65th as Jonas Olsson latched on to a poor clearance and saw his shot squirm through Hennessey’s fingers. Wolves’ misery was compounded when Peter Odemwingie picked up the scraps from an Olsson corner to fire home number three in the 78th. Wolves’ humiliation reached new depths in the final seven minutes as Keith Andrews punished his former club with a shot from the D after Morrison provided the cut-back for 4-1, and Morrison then squared the ball for Peter Odemwingie to complete his hat-trick in the 87th.

Zambia 0 – Ivory Coast 0 (Pens. 8-7) (African Cup of Nations final, February 12, 2012) 34-year-old Copper Bullets’ defender Joseph Musonda was reduced to tears in the 10th minute when injury forced him off the pitch in the biggest match of his career. The Ivorians won a penalty in the 68th minute when Gervinho was shoved in the back by a couple of Zambia players, but Didier Drogba skied the spot-kick over the bar to the relief of all Zambian fans. After 120 goalless minutes the final went to penalties where, after 14 consecutive converted penalties Kolo Toure and then Rainford Kalaba both missed, Gervinho missed the crucial Ivorian penalty before Stoppila Sunzu scored the historic winning penalty for Zambia.

Real Madrid 4 – Levante 2 (La Liga, February 12, 2012) Los Blancos conceded early doors against Levante as a free-kick was headed in at the back stick by Gustavo Daniel Cabral. The visitors’ advantage melted away at the end of the first half as they lost Iborra for a handball in the box and Cristiano Ronaldo rubbed salt in the wound by scoring from the spot. Early in the second half Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a Higuain cross for his 33rd goal in 33 appearances this season. Cristiano Ronaldo capped a sublime performance in 57th when the Portugeezer scored a big dipper from 30-yards to seal his umpteenth career hat-trick. Almost immediately Levante scored themselves as Aroune Kone scored with a towering header to pull one back for 10-men Levante. In the 66th Real were 4-2 up as Karim Benzema bagged a beauty with a curler to restore Madrid’s 2-goal cushion.

Valencia 4 – Sporting Gijon 0 (La Liga, February 12, 2012) Sofiane Feghouli struck a stunning volley and Jonas scored twice in added time as Valencia thumped struggling Sporting Gijon 4-0.

Villarreal 3 – Granada 1 (La Liga, February 12, 2012) Villarreal took the lead after 16 minutes when Cani played in Marco Ruben who fired a powerful effort into the top corner. Granada levelled the match after 50 minutes when Inigo Lopez connected with a Martins cross to head his side back into the match. Villarreal did not have to wait long to regain the lead as Borja Valero ended a sweeping move with a cool finish. It was 3-1 after 73 minutes when the ball bounced in off Cesar to compound the away side’s misery.

Malaga 3 – Mallorca 1 (La Liga, February 12, 2012) Michael Pereira put the visitors ahead with the game less than four minutes old with a thunderous low free-kick, but Seba Fernandez equalised soon after for Malaga.  Jeremy Toulalan then put the hosts in front in the second half and Salomon Rondon extended his team’s advantage with 23 minutes remaining.

Catania 4 – Genoa 0 (Serie A, February 12, 2012) A Francesco Lodi penalty fired Catania 1-up against Genoa. The Sicilians doubled their lead through Pablo Cezar Barrientos soon after the interval, and Genoa looked like a team who had given up the cause when Pablo Cezar Barrientos hit in a third in the 52nd. Genoa’s misery was compounded as Gonzalo Bergessio made it 4-nil in the 62nd.

Lille 4 – Bordeaux 5 (Ligue 1, February 12, 2012) Bordeaux got off to a rip-roaring start as Nicolas Maurice-Belay netted after just two minutes. The fast start continued as David Rozehnal levelled for Lille in the 8th, but by the 17th the visitors had reasserted their lead as Ludovic Obraniak added number two. (First half goals) The contest seemed over when Nicolas Maurice-Belay and Yoan Gouffran extended Bordeaux’s lead to 4 – 1 by the hour, but Lille had other ideas. Eden Hazard reduced the deficit in the 65th, whilst the hosts pulled the match to 3-4 when Mathieu Debuchy netted with 15 minutes remaining. A pulsating match was concluded in injury time as attacker Nolan Roux levelled the match 4-4 to complete a stunning comeback. Amazingly there was still time for a late twist as deep into injury time Ludovic Obraniak grabbed his second of the game to earn Bordeauxa 5-4 away win.

The temperature was cranked up a few hundred notches before kick-off when Luis Suarez snubbed Patrice Evra’s handshake. A weak Paul Scholes header was about the best of the chances in the 1st half. (First-half highlights)Wayne Rooney found himself unmarked in the box and volleyed United into the lead right after the restart. United wasted little time in delivering the sucker-punch, Wayne Rooney (Nuts!) making no mistake when put through 1 on 1 by Valencia. That man Luis Suarez pulled one back for Liverpool late on but it proved to be mere consolation as United held out for victory. Evra ran to celebrate at the United end at full-time, with Suarez very nearby.

James McClean capitalised on an injury to Per Mertasacker to put Sunderland 1-0 in front on 70 minutes at the Stadium of Light. Aaron Ramsey equalised 5 minutes later for Arsenal. In the 92nd minute, after coming on as a substitute, and after great work by the much maligned Andrey Arshavin, Thierry Henry won the match for Arsenal with a fine finish from a cross by the Russian.

Tottenham 5 – Newcastle 0 (Premier League, February 11, 2012) (MOTD highlights.) With White Hart Lane a cauldron of noise, as the home fans urged Harry Redknapp to stay at Spurs, it took the home side just four minutes to take the lead, Bale and Adebayor playing a 1-2 that was finished at the back post by Benoit Assou Ekotto. Just 2 minutes later and Tottenham were 2-0 up as Adebayor charged down the right and crossed for Louis Saha to score his first goal for the club. The dream start for Spurs continued in the 20th minute as Louis Saha slotted home a third from an Adebayor lay-off. And a terrific half from Tottenham was completed when Niko Kranjcar scored his first goal for a year. Tottenham strolled through much of the second half but after claiming four assists, Emmanuel Adebayor volleyed in the fifth.

Blackburn 3 – QPR 2 (Premier League, February 11, 2012) (Alternative highlights, MOTD highlights.) In the relegation six pointer Blackburn raced into a 3-0 lead by the break thanks to goals from the returning Aiyegbeni Yakubu, a second by Steven Nzonzi and the third was a Nedum Onuoha own goal. A late brace from Jamie Mackie on 71 and 91 (cracking strike) pulled QPR into a goal of their fellow relegation strugglers.

Osasuna 3 – Barcelona 2 (La Liga, February 11, 2012) (Alternative highlights.) Barcelona went 1-0 down after only four minutes, Raul Garcia beat Carles Puyol to the ball and Dejan Lekic put Osasuna into a shock lead. Eighteen minutes later Osasuna (and Real Madrid) were in dreamland as Dejan Lekic made it 2-0. Six minutes after the break it looked like Barcelona would make a comeback when Alexis Sanchez halved the deficit but five minutes later Raul Garcia restored the two-goal deficit. With 17 minutes to go Cristian Tello pulled another back for Barcelona to leave the home side hanging on. In the dying seconds, Alexis Sanchez had a goal disallowed for the 3rd time in the match.

Real Betis 2 – Athletic Bilbao 1 (La Liga, February 11, 2012) Ruben Castro produced a sublime finish to fire the hosts in front with only 10 minutes on the clock as he curled a first-time effort beyond Gorka Iraizoz from a tight angle on the left of the area. Bilbao were back on terms midway through the first period, with Javi Martinez heading home, only for the midfielder to be given his marching orders in the second period for a second bookable offence, with Nelson then emerging as the hero.

Udinese 1 – AC Milan 2 (Serie A, February 11, 2012) AC Milan’s rubbish recent form continued in the first half at Udinese as they went down to a goal from veteran goal scoring machine Antonio Di Natale. New signing Maxi Lopez equalised on 77 and Stephan El Shaarawy bagged the winner eight minutes later to arrest a recent poor run of form for the Rossoneri.

Cagliari 2 – Palermo 1 (Serie A, February 11, 2012) Mauricio Pinilla gave the home side the lead in the 56th minute, scoring against his former club, and Daniele Dessena doubled their advantage in the 81st minute.  However, a penalty from Abel Hernandez a minute later gave Palermo hope and the home team had to survive a late onslaught from the Rosaneri before earning the points in front of just a few thousand fans.

Bayern Munich 2 – Kaiserslautern 0 (Bundesliga, February 11, 2012) First half goals from Mario Gomez and Thomas Muller eased Bayern to a comfortable victory.

Stuttgart 5 – Hertha Berlin 0 (Bundesliga, February 11, 2012) Recent signing Vedad Ibisevic opened the scoring for the hosts after 24 minutes and Martin Harnik scored his first of the game four minutes later. Shinji Okazaki netted on 32 minutes and, after making it 4-0 before half-time, Harnik then completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark.

Mainz 1 – Hannover 1 (Bundesliga, February 11, 2012) Mohamed Zidan’s seventh minute goal had Mainz in command until Arthur Sobiech, who was only introduced in the 86th minute, equalised with a minute remaining.

Werder Bremen 1 – Hoffenheim 1 (Bundesliga, February 11, 2012) Marko Arnautovic scored a last-minute leveller as Werder Bremen snatched a 1-1 draw at home with mid-table Hoffenheim. Jannik Vestegaard’s fourth minute goal appeared likely to give Hoffenheim the points until Arnautovic’s dramatic intervention.

Monchengladbach 3 – Schalke 0 (Bundesliga, February 11, 2012) Gladbach stunned Schalke with three first-half goals to win the late game 3-0 and take over from the visitors in third, one point behind Bayern. Marco Reus got the home side off to a flying start in the second minute, when he eluded two Schalke defenders to score inside the far post from a tight angle.  Mike Hanke then played a delicate one-two with Juan Arango before curling a shot beyond Lars Unnerstall in the 16th. Reus teed up an indirect free kick for Arango to stroke over the wall and in off the underside of the crossbar from 20 meters (yards) in the 32nd.

Valenciennes 1 – Nancy 0 (Ligue 1, February 11, 2012) Substitute Mamadou Samassa also scored in the second minute of stoppage-time as Valenciennes battled for a 1-0 home win over Nancy.

Auxerre 1 – Lorient 1 (Ligue 1, February 11, 2012) Willy Boly’s goal gave Auxerre an 18th minute lead and, three minutes later, Lorient had goalkeeper Fabien Audard sent off for deliberate handball.  However, with Auxerre seemingly hanging on for three points, Innocent Emeghara snatched a point for the visitors with an equaliser in the second minute of stoppage-time.

Rennes 1 – Sochaux 0 (Ligue 1, February 11, 2012) Rennes remain in the battle for a Champions League spot after a battling 1-0 home win over bottom club Sochaux. Recent signing Mevlut Erding scored the only goal on 16 minutes, while Rennes came close to a second when Vincent Pajot struck the crossbar.

The Blues were level four minutes after the break when Harry Bunn scored at the second attempt after seeing his spot-kick – awarded for Michael Keane’s handling offence – saved by Tomasz Kuszczak. A terrific flowing move, on the hour, involving William Keane and Joshua King, concluded with Larnell Cole restoring United’s lead, but City were soon back on terms through substitute Gai Assulin. Five minutes later, and a thunderous long-range shot from Omar Elabdellaoui gave City the lead for the first time and then the Blues sealed victory in the last minute when Jordi Hiwula grabbed their fourth goal after taking Assulin’s pass.

Wolfsburg 3 – Freiburg 2 (Bundesliga, February 10, 2012) Wolfsburg got their heads in front thanks to a Petr Jiracek strike after five minutes, but Freiburg were level in the 11th when Johannes Flum found the net. Die Wolves retook the advantage just three minutes later through Marcel Schafer, but the sides went into the break on an even-footing after Daniel Caligiuri pulled the visitors level in the 38th. Just past the hour mark Wolfsburg took the lead for the third time as Petr Jiracek cashed in on his brace.

FC Twente 2 – Heracles 3 (Eredivisie, February 10, 2012) Heracles took the lead in the 33rd minute when a Samuel Armenteros cross was headed home by Everton. Luuk de Jong pulled Twente level in the 73rd, but Heracles scored twice in three minutes through Darl Douglas and Everton in the 81st and 84th to secure a shock away win. Luuk de Jong’s late second proved mere consolation.

Trabzonspor 4 – Gaziantepspor 1 (Super Lig, February 10, 2012) The hosts were gifted an early lead through Ivelin Popov’s sixth-minute own-goal, and strengthened their hand after half-time with a Burak Yilmaz penalty in the 56th minute and a Mustafa Yumlu strike soon after.  Marek Sapara gave the relegation-battling visitors faint hope in the 70th minute, but goalkeeper Zydrunas Karcemarskas was sent off 12 minutes from time and Yilmaz sealed the win with his second penalty of the night.

Napoli’s task became that much harder midway through the second half as Gaetano D’Agostino fired Siena into a 2-goal lead. The visitors claimed a lifeline in the 84th minute when Emanuele Pesoli scored an own goal to leave the second leg wide open.

Lazio 3 – Cesena 2 (Serie A, February 9, 2012) Cesena stormed into an early lead in Roma through centre-forward Adrian Mutu. Lazio’s match imploded in the 33rd minute when Abdoulay Konko was shown a straight red card whilst giving away a penalty, and Cesena duly cashed in from the spot through Vincenzo Iaquinta. Lazio began their fightback in the 53rd minute when Hernanes halved the deficit. Edoardo Reja’s side then clawed their way back to parity through Senad Lulic in the 61st, and incredibly the ten Romans completed their turnaround just two minutes later when Libor Kozak fired the Scudetto outsides 3-2 ahead. Sivasspor 1 – Besiktas 1 (Super Lig, February 9, 2012) Tomas Sivok fired Besiktas ahead just before the break, but Siivas claimed a thrilling 85th minute equaliser on the icy pitch courtesy of a belter from Erman Kilic.

Istanbul Buyuksehir 2 – Karabukspor 2 (Super Lig, February 9, 2012) During a match in which the snowy conditions got increasingly worse, Samuel Holmen fired the hosts ahead only for Mehmet Yildiz and Florin Cernat to swing the match Karabukspor. Edin Visca had the final say with a neat volley five minutes from time.
