Algerian football fans received a rare treat this week when Zinedine Zidane, along with his 1998 World Cup winning cohorts, touched down in Algiers to take on the Fennecs ’92 squad in a star-studded game of futsal. The exhibition match was staged in order to raise money for Haiti.
The match was historic as Zidane, born to Algerian immigrants who settled in France, returned back in Algeria for the first time in four years. Zidane was happy to show off his Algerian roots, donning the national flag before kick-off, to the delight of the locals.
Along with Zidane, Lilian Thuram, Christian Karembeu, Laurent Blanc, Vincent Candela, Bernard Lama, Bernard Diomede and Didier Deschamps were all present. Although slightly tubbier than in their heyday, the French legends ran out comfortable 8-2 victors, with Zidane bagging a brace.
