Peruvian striker Paolo Guerrero has committed some stupid acts whilst in the Bundesliga but today’s sending off for Hamburg against Stuttgart may rank as the worst yet.
Of course, it takes something ridiculous to trump throwing a drinks bottle at his own fans, earning him a five-match ban, as Guerrero did in April 2010 but today’s sending off may have been one of the most ridiculous and ugly this season.
Hamburg were 3-0 down with nine minutes played of the second half when Guerrero chased a ball into the corner with Stuttgart keeper Sven Ulreich.
The ball was going out for a goal-kick, Guerrero had no chance of getting there yet cynically raked his studs down the keeper’s leg and was subsequently shown a straight red card.
With 10 men, Hamburg would go on to lose 4-0 and Guerrero can expect to face a lengthy ban for a shocking and deliberate red card.
