Three matches were held at the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday night to celebrate the career of former Holland, Ajax, Juventus, Fulham and Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar.
For Arsenal fans enduring a worrying summer with the potential exits of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, there was a glimpse of the good old days under Arsene Wenger when the Gunners were led by a deadly Dutch pairing.
In the second game of three, the first had pitted Ajax Under-13s v Manchester United Under-13s, including Edwin’s son Joe for the Red Devils, an Ajax 95 team played against a Netherlands 98 side.
The encounter was won thanks to a solitary goal from former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars. The speedster beat three defenders before cracking a superb shot into the far corner.
And in the final encounter of the three, between Ajax and an Edwin van der Sar dream team, it was Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp who had the final say to seal a 2-1 win.
Bergkamp once again proved he “has still got it” with a trademark cool finish in the 50th minute, on this video.
Somewhat ironically for Arsenal fans, it was two Manchester United stalwarts in Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs, who were also involved in the goal.
