“It really is a dream come true to be signing for Manchester United. I have had a great time at Crewe and I would like to thank them for helping me to develop as a player over the past 13 years. I’m excited about continuing my development with Sir Alex and the world-class players in the squad. The thought of making the step up to the Premier League next season is an exciting prospect. I can’t wait to get started.” – Nick Powell.
“We have scouted Nick for months now. He is an exceptional talent and has been schooled well at Crewe. I’m delighted he has chosen to come to United. He has a lot to offer and we are all looking forward to working with him.” – Sir Alex Ferguson.
The rumours have been rife for a few weeks and despite interest from a host of other big name Premier League clubs, Manchester United announced the signing of Nick Powell on Tuesday evening.
Following hot on the heels of Shinji Kagawa, it appears Sir Alex Ferguson is intent on improving his attacking midfield options at Old Trafford with Luka Modric, or a player similar in style, reportedly next on Manchester United’s transfer target list.
Powell made his breakthrough into the Crewe first team in 2010/2011 but really shone as they earned promotion from League Two through the play-offs in 2011/2012.
A tally of 15 goals in 41 games from midfield is hugely impressive and Powell has also represented England at Under 16, 17 and 18 levels. Despite playing in the fourth tier of English football, the 18-year-old has shown an eye for goal and the ability to finish with both feet.
Below is a video round-up of all Nick Powell’s goals for Crewe in 2011/2012 and after the jump a couple of Golazos and his individual performance in the League Two play-off final against Cheltenham.
