Hold the back-pages! Wayne Rooney threw his boot on the floor! Madness! (That’s sarcasm for anyone who missed it.)
While in the past the Manchester United forward has had a chequered history of poor tackles and some public outbursts, by contrast last night in Istanbul Wayne Rooney’s moment of upset after being subbed for Michael Owen really isn’t all that big a deal. That hasn’t stopped the fourth estate making a mountain out of a molehill this Wednesday.
Rooney was replaced by Michael Owen in the 63rd minute, and the England striker made it perfectly clear to the watching masses of his displeasure at being taken off. With his head down and shaking, Rooney’s annoyance was written all over his face as his trundled off the the United bench. And once in the dugout Rooney acted out, first by getting involved in a minor altercation with a set of home fans and then more obviously as the number 10 pulled off his boot and chucked onto the ground.
Footage of Wayne Rooney’s outburst at his substitution can be seen here.
