With the world at his feet, 17-year-old Italian Federico Macheda is today waking up into a different world and it is us, the public, who have the job of swotting up on the latest Manchester United star of tomorrow.
Showing how unknown Macheda, it was noticeable how two separate articles in the broadsheets this morning both took on the challenge of discovering more about the youngster by probing his Facebook profile. (Check it out here.)
Mark Ogden drew the conclusion that “his Facebook site, complete with pictures alongside numerous glamorous blondes, only highlights his innocence and youthful naivety.” While Sam Wallace similarly wrote “At least if he finds himself in the same establishment again he will have no trouble persuading anyone he is genuinely a United player.”
Looking as greasy as to be a clone of Cristiano Ronaldo, Macheda has been in fine form in the Manchester United reserves this season bagging eight goals for Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s charges, adding to his 12 goals chalked up last season.
To many in the know, the young Italian’s talents have been talked of for some time and there has even been chatter that Macheda, along with Rodrigo Possebon, could head up to Ibrox next season in an effort to gain some valuable playing time at Rangers. (Read here.)
But the truth remains that Macheda, who joined United’s academy from Lazio 18 months ago, had until yesterday remained almost unknown outside Old Trafford. His injury-time winner over Aston Villa has now changed all that.

And for those of you who have never heard Macheda speak, his post-match interview with Gary Neville after yesterday’s match can be seen here.
