The bastion of truth that is the News of the World report today that Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has targeted Bordeaux left back Benoit Tremoulinas to bolster his squad for the upcoming Champions League campaign.
Spurs were particularly impressive down the left hand side last season especially in the latter weeks. The partnership of Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Gareth Bale was solid defensively and threatening going forward.
The problem for the Tottenham boss is whether it is worth reverting the Welsh wizard back to his original position of left back when he looked so threatening in a more attacking role. This dilemma was illustrated in Spurs’ 3-1 defeat at Manchester United when Bale played left back and BAE was bizarrely pushed over to the right.
If Redknapp has decided to only use Bale on the left wing (to compete with the likes of Luka Modric and Niko Kranjcar) Spurs need some cover for Assou-Ekotto and Tremoulinas could well be an inspired signing giving both more squad depth and a challenge to the current left back who shares the same first name.
The 24-year-old has come through the ranks at Bordeaux and has been compared by some to former France great (and now European Jiu Jitsu champions) Bixente Lizarazu. Tremoulinas has emerged under the stewardship of Laurent Blanc over the last couple of seasons and could now join a host of players to leave after it was announced that “Larry White” will leave Les Girondins to take over the French national team.
At 5.7ft he shares a lot of similarities to Assou-Ekotto, including quick feet and pace on the flank and he can get forward. Tremoulinas played a significant role in Bordeaux’s Ligue 1 title success last season and in 2009/2010 fully established himself as the first choice left back.
Tremoulinas has claimed his first goals for the Bordeaux first team and also courted controversy showing his combative style. He also looks like a future France national team defender but faces huge competition to emerge into the Les Bleus squad with the likes of Patrice Evra, Gael Clichy and Eric Abidal in his way.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will likely sanction this move as Tremoulinas has resell value and Redknapp could do a lot worse than bring in competition for Assou-Ekotto who can switch off at times. He will though not come cheap as he has three seasons left on his deal with Bordeaux. But, like Bale he can play on the wing, has a dangerous left foot and will bag his fair share of assists.
Spurs fans will be eager to see Tremoulinas in action and whilst we don’t have a simple YouTube compilation there are reasons for Tottenham supporters to get equally excited and worried:
1. Only last week Tremoulinas scored one of the goals of the season against Sochaux.
2. In March he showed his “combative side” with a kung-fu kick on Marseille’s Mathieu Valbuena as Bordeaux slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Marseille in the Coupe de la Ligue in March.
