Media reports over the weekend have linked Manchester United with a swoop for 24-year-old Estudiantes striker Mauro Boselli. If Alex Ferguson does pull this transfer off, perhaps Manchester United should become known as South America United as the club will have six South Americans in its squad.
Boselli began his career at one of Argentina’s greatest clubs Boca Juniors. In his first stint at the club he made 11 appearances and netted twice. He was then sent out on loan to gain some experience with Malaga B in Spain. where scored five times in 35 appearances.
On his return to Boca his chances in the first team were limited as he was playing second fiddle to the favoured pairing of MartÃn Palermo and Rodrigo Palacio. In 2008 Estudiantes moved for the player and brought him to La Plata. He quickly became the club’s first choice striker as he netted seven goals in his first 13 league games with the club.
Since his move in 2008 he has scored an incredible 45 goals in 52 games, an absolutely amazing strike-rate and helped his club to the Copa Libertadores scoring eight goals.
Boselli is the arch predator in the 18 yard box. Right foot, left foot or with his head it doesn’t matter as everything he hits turns to goals. Unsurprisingly, he is ice cool in front of goal and never feels pressurised into making the wrong choice.
When not scavenging in the box he looks to play off the shoulder of the last man searching for through balls to latch onto. He stands at 5ft 11 inches and so is able to deal with the more physical of centre-halves.
For all his work in the box, he is build up play is relatively poor. He is not the type of player to hold the ball up and look for support, his sole focus is on banging the ball into the net. Will this sort of one dimensional play appeal to Alex Ferguson?
Nevertheless, United’s over-reliance on Wayne Rooney has encouraged an emphasis on recruiting firepower for next season. The Red Devils signed Mexican striker Javier Hernandez whilst
Dimitar Berbatov is on borrowed time and Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf are too young and are not yet ready to feature regularly for the side.
Manchester United are said to be interested in signing him for about £5 million but it will take a £8- 10 million bid to prise him from his club. If United don’t sign him there will be many other suitors.
Video evidence of Mauro Boselli can be seen here.
