Following Arsene Wenger’s admission that Arsenal can not compete for the signature of the world’s top players and his pathetic failure to pull out his finger until the transfer window deadline, it seems that the Frenchman is reverting to what he enjoys best, buying a youngster.
The latest teenager that the Gunners have been linked with is 18-year-old Nassim Ben Khalifa who is currently plying his trade with Grasshopper Zurich in Switzerland.
The striker progressed through the youth teams of various lower league clubs until he caught the eye of the Swiss powerhouse and signed with them in 2008. He has made 12 appearances for the club and bagged two goals.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a known admirer of Ben Khalifa after watching the 18-year-old star for Switzerland at the Under-17 World Cup in November where he allegedly also caught the eye of Inter, Ajax and Wolfsburg.
He was awarded the Silver Ball trophy for the second best player of the tournament. He displayed excellent aerial ability which is unsurprising for a player who stands at 6 ft. Despite being blessed with height and the ability to hustle defenders and hold up the ball he has the necessary pace to run beyond the defense to stretch the game which is an attribute that Wenger admires.
As for his shooting he is predominantly right footed although he is not scared of shooting with his left and like all the best attackers he has excellent movement in the box. Additionally, he possesses a powerful shot making him dangerous from distance.
Reports emanating from Germany suggest that Wolfsburg have made it their priority to sign the Swiss hit-man and are nearing a deal with the Swiss club.
Arsene Wenger will have to act decisively if he is to capture Ben Khalifa for Arsenal. He will be allowed to move for €2.5 million, a paltry sum for a punt that could turn out to be a masterstroke.
