“Tonight was a great atmosphere. The majority were here to enjoy the spectacle. It’s a shame some people spoiled it. It’s disappointing kids see it … but it was a great atmosphere.” – David Beckham.
In general, as Goldenballs points out above, Toronto and Canada seemed largely excited to welcome David Beckham for the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Although, there is the caveat that video has emerged of Toronto FC fans burning a Beckham shirt pre match.
Once the match got under way, 47,658 at the Rogers Centre made an impressive noise proving just how popular soccer can be in north America.
There was though an unsavoury incident late on as LA Galaxy came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 and take the advantage in the two-legged tie.
Trailing 2-1 with a couple of minutes to go, Beckham was preparing to take a corner when a beer can was thrown at his feet and the former England captain immediately picked up the offending drinks holder and showed the referee and linesman.
After making a fuss and showing his disdain, Beckham delivered a trademark curling right-footed corner that Toronto failed to deal with and Landon Donovan flicked in the equaliser.
As Brooks Peck points out on Dirty Tackle, “David Beckham will not be deterred by your beer, Canada.”
