Angel Di Maria better start getting his act together. Otherwise he’ll go from being known as a world class talent to being the bane of referees.
The Argentina attacker was sent off for Manchester United tonight in their FA Cup defeat to Arsenal.
It was an avoidable dismissal. Adjudged to have dived, Di Maria was handed a yellow card by referee Michael Oliver. Aggrieved at that decision he tugged on Oliver’s shirt and felt his wrath as he was hit with another yellow card, reducing United to ten men.
Some will argue that it was controversial and harsh – though the majority of reactions have supported Oliver’s decision – but Di Maria should have known not to cross the man in black.
A tweet from Duncan Alexander reminded us that it wasn’t the first time he was sent off in this fashion. He looked like an idiot when he was dismissed from Real Madrid’s game against Deportivo in 2013.
Not standing far enough away from an opposition free kick, Di Maria was cautioned. For some reason he chose to continue standing there rather petulantly and the ref made him regret it.
Er, remember Di Maria doing this https://t.co/beiPK7av2X
