Gremio kicked off their journey in this season’s Copa Libertadores by scraping a narrow 1-nil victory against Colombian outfit Boyaca Chico last night, but the match will be remembered for an astonishing triple miss from Jonas who will now enter the annals for one of the great historic footballing gaffes.
The moment of infamy arrived in the 79th minute when Jonas, clean through with just Chico’s goalie Edigson Velasquez to beat, saw his initial side-footed effort turned away from the home shot-stopper.
But that was just the beginning.
Although Velasquez got two hands on the ball, the keeper failed to get any distance on the save. And, with the ball dropping inside the area, Jonas followed up his initial effort by charging in and stealing possession for a second attempt, this time in front of an open net.
2-nil, right. D’oh! Jonas’ awful left-footed shot ricocheted off the post as the ball refused to cross to the line.
But incredibly, for a third time, the ball came back to Jonas, and this time it looked impossible to miss as the Gremio number 7 virtually walked the ball onto the goalline after beating keeper Velasquez, who by this stage had been given enough time to emerge back into the action.
A yard out. The empty goal gaping. It had to be. It wasn’t!
