Vasco beat Lanus 2-1 in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday night, and the highlight of the first leg of the last-16 tie was a sublime golazo from striker Diego Souza.
The move started when a pass was play infield towards Souza, but rather than collecting the pass the Vasco number 10 played a cute dummy. The ball ran onto Alecsandro, who in turn fed the ball back into Souza’s onrushing path.
Then came the genius.
With two Lanus defenders for company, Souza controlled Alecsandro’s high pass with a neat touch. Better was soon to follow though, as the attacker lifted the ball over defender Diego Braghieri (known as a “sombrero” in South America), only to hit it on the volley for a stunning strike.
