One of the undoubted stories of the season in European football has been the rise of Borussia Monchengladbach to second in the Bundesliga table.
Just over a year ago, Lucien Favre took over with Gladbach in 18th position in the top division in Germany, now they are three points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund and a point ahead of Bayern Munich.
In particular, their post winter break form has been immense. Starting with a 3-1 win over Bayern, they have followed this victory up by beating Stuttgart, Schalke and Kaiserslautern in the league and reaching the DFB Pokal semi-final, playing some excellent football.
As a result of their scintillating season Marco “Rolls” Reus has already been poached by Borussia Dortmund and the likes of Roman Neustadter and highly-rated Brazilian defender Dante have also been linked with moves to a bigger club.
Nevertheless, the Foals remain in contention to win their first Bundesliga title since 1977 and much like Spurs in England, may not win the league, but have lit up the campaign with some sensational football.
Rafa Honigstein described Gladbach as the “romantic story of the season” last week in The Guardian but above all it is the brilliant tiki-taka esque football, played with speed and purpose that has really stood out.
Juan Arango’s goal at Kaiserslautern on Saturday was an excellent illustration and so is this video, originally titled “Borussia Barcelona” on YouTube, highlighting some really eye catching moves produced by Favre’s side this season.
