Already dubbed “The £60m match,” the hype is speeding into overdrive this Sunday ahead of Wednesday night’s thrilling fixture between Manchester City and Tottenham at the City of Manchester Stadium.
In short, should Spurs win against the Citizens then the Lilywhites will confirm their spot in Europe’s premier club competition, the Champions League, for the first time since 1961. Equally, should Manchester City win then the richest club in England will place themselves in pole position to join Europe’s elite and, with money to burn, the expectations for City are sky high.
Looking forward to the fixture, the talking heads on Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement show took turns at discussing the implications of the meeting between Tottenham and Man City.
On City, consensus opinion seemed to be that whether they win or lose, manager Roberto Mancini appears likely to walk the plank this summer. However should City reach the European promise land, all the pundits expect City to splash the cash to excess in bringing in some of the world’s top talent.
The race for fourth was also debated on Soccer Saturday before both Spurs and Manchester City won on Saturday, and Phil Thompson had his nose put out of joint as Liverpool weren’t put on the Sky graphic.
