It appears to have been a day of bad challenges across English football.

Yet arguably the worst “tackles” of the day came from two Sunderland players at Hull on Saturday with referee Andre Marriner left no choice but to flash red cards.

Lee Cattermole was the first to go three minutes into first half injury time with a poor studs up challenge on Ahmed El Mohamady.

For Cattermole it was very much in keeping with a career of indiscipline and terrible fouls.

Two minutes later, Andrea Dossena pulled off an even worse attack on Hull’s David Meyler who was forced off with injury later on in the match.

For Gus Poyet, after guiding Sunderland to a 2-1 derby win over Newcastle, this must have been hugely galling and frustrating.
