David Bentley, so long in the Tottenham wilderness this season, used a reserve match against the great enemy Arsenal to remind Lillywhites why their club splashed out a massive £15 million on the right-winger last summer.
Aside from Bentley, Spurs’ fielded a strong side boasting the close-to-fully-fit Alan Hutton, while Pascal Chimbonda, Ricardo Rocha, Gilberto, Jamie O’Hara, Gareth Bale and Frazier Campbell also featured in the match played at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road. But it was the former Gooner who stole all the plaudits with a stylish double.
Bentley bagged the opener midway through the first half, crashing home an acrobatic scissor-volley from inside the box after Gareth Bale had broken free and delivered a cross on the left-hand side.
But it was the second, twenty minutes from time, which showed Bentley’s class. The number seven collected the ball 30-yards out in the middle of the pitch and, with little backlift, the midfielder picked his spot perfectly to send a sensational curler into the top corner.
Sanchez Watt netted a consolation for the Gunners.
