Monday night in Coventry was the unlikely setting for a historic moment in Senegalese football.
The West Africans faced off against Oman in climactic play-off match in the windy Midlands.
The game decided the 16th and final place in the men’s tournament, and it began excitedly with a goal after only two minutes from Senegal striker Ibrahima Balde, who headed home unmarked from a free-kick. Oman were killed off two minutes from time when substitute Abdoulaye Sane claimed the clincher.
The victory secured Senegal’s first football participation an an Olympic Games, and it was celebrated by the players in jovial style.
Having gathered together on the pitch after the full time whistle, and with Lady Gaga blearing on the Ricoh Arena’s sound system, the entire squad – 17 players – choreographed a dance routine that ended their qualification on an entertaining high.
