Los Blancos lost for the first time this season on Sunday night, going down 2-1 at Sevilla, but the scoreline could have been far worse for the Madridistas had it not been for a world-class performance by keeper Iker Casillas between the Real sticks.
Goalies rarely get the praise they deserve, yet Casillas is one of the few number ones who stand out from the crowd. He held no blame for either goal which Real conceded, but when he was twice called into action the shot-stopper showed feline reactions to protect his net.
In injury time at the end of the first half, Casillas made a magical save to deny Renato’s point-blank header. With only just over a yard separating the pair, Casillas’s amazing reflexes came to the fore as the goalie instinctively diverted Renato’s effort from three yards out.
And if that wasn’t enough, early in the second period Casillas produced another see-it-to-believe-it save. Alvaro Negrado burst down the right hand side and appeared to deliver the ball on a silver platter to Diego Perotti at the back-stick. But the Sevilla midfielder hadn’t accounted for the incredible Casillas, who somehow scampered across his goalline to claw out Perotti’s shot against all the odds.
