A day after the death of his step-father, and a day after it was revealed that Ronaldinho could be slapped with a 12-match ban for a brutal kick on Germio’s Kleber, the bucked-tooth wonder shook off all his troubles with a sensational performance in the Brazilian top flight.
Atletico Mineiro kept their slim title hopes flickering with a six-nil demolition of Figueirense, and Ronaldinho stole the show, the plaudits and the headlines with a wonderful solo display.
Ronaldinho opened the scoring for Mineiro with a curling shot from outside the box that sailed majestically into the top corner. Although it looked a little like a cross, Ronaldinho’s reaction – he instantly dropped to his knees and began bawling – meant that most interrupted the goal as intentional and thus brilliant.
Ronaldinho added to his tally with a a free-kick before completing his hat-trick with a penalty. He also laid on goals for defender Rever and striker Bernard before Carlos Cesar completed the rout.
