“We got our place in Copa Libertadores and I am really happy about it. The objective was to make Flamengo play in important competitions again. It was an amazing year for me. I won the Carioca championship, I went back to the Selecao and I could give happiness to the Flamengo supporters and that was the most important thing. For me, I could end my career here.” -Â Ronaldinho.
Eyebrows were raised when Ronaldinho swapped the San Siro for the samba city of Rio at the start of 2011, but a year on it looks like the buck-toothed wonder made one of the best decisions of his career going home to Brazil.
Twelve months ago Ronaldinho was at a crossroads at AC Milan. In the tail-end of his footballing life, Dinho had lost his place in the Rossoneri starting XI as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho arrived at the club. With the 2014 World Cup already on the horizon, he needed to do something drastic to revive his flagging career.
So Flamengo called. Ronaldinho jumped at the chance to ditch Europe for his native land. And 21 goals later, that decision has been fully justified.
Back to the present day, even though Ronaldinho signed a four year deal with Fla, there are currently whispers that the playmaker may be off this summer. Flamengo have failed to pay part of his wages for over the last four months, leading to speculation that a move is imminent. PSG and Panathinaikos are said to be sniffing around the star, while the LA Galaxy have also been mentioned as a possible destination too.
