Derby County are currently experiencing a horrible downturn of form, as the former English giants are in the midst of a miserable run that has seen the Rams win three of their last 15 matches including three defeats and two draws in their last five outings. The bad feeling around the club sunk to new levels last weekend after a 4-1 home thrashing at he hands of fellow relegation scrappers Scunthorpe, and eventually something gave during Robbie Savages’ post match press conference with local journalists.
Captain Savage, who has been at Pride Park since 2008, reacted furiously to criticisms he had heard about his team, and in a brilliantly confrontational meeting with the press, the fiery Welshman turned on the hacks to give them his two cents.
Reacting to rumours that Derby players were unhappy with the regime at the club, skipper Savage moved to dismiss the allegations head on. Savage flatly denied any problems with the coaching staff, defending manager Nigel Clough and coaches John Metgod, Gary Crosby, Martin Taylor and Andy Garner one by one.
Savage: “‘I sit in that dressing room every day and they are up to the job 100% and so is the manager… Johnny Metgod played for Real Madrid for a start. Gary Crosby played in four or five cup finals for Nottingham Forest. Martin Taylor played in the top division and Andy Garner was a very good lower league player and played for Derby.”
