As is so often the way in English football nowadays, referee Michael Oliver dominated the chatter surrounding Arsenal’s 2-1 win at Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Monday night.
A second half Danny Welbeck goal secured a 2-1 victory for the Arsenal at Old Trafford after first half strikes by Nacho Monreal and Wayne Rooney.
Oliver’s prime input into the game was sending off Angel Di Maria for two offences in quick succession.
Just after the Argentine was booked for diving, Di Maria touched Oliver and received a lightning quick second yellow.
Towards the end of the match, the official also waved away protests from Manchester United for a penalty after Nacho Monreal challenged Adnan Januzaj in the box.
Perhaps Hector Bellerin was lucky not to be sent off before being withdrawn but all in all it looked like Michael Oliver had a very good game in trying circumstances.
And, this was reflected on Twitter, where Michael Oliver was praised to the hilt for his display.
Credit where due, Michael Oliver has been absolutely brilliant tonight. One of the best referees we have in England, by some distance too.

I'm usually one of the first to criticise referees, but Michael Oliver truly has been outstanding. Some brave calls. Credit where it's due.

Michael Oliver is unflappable. Unafraid of making big decisions at Old Trafford – cos Fergie's retired.
