Sporting Lisbon 3 – Trofense 1 (Superliga, August 23, 2008) Sporting raced to a 3-0 advantage within the opening half-hour against the newly promoted Trofense. Tonel, Izmailov and Djalo all scored for Sporting before they had Polga sent off in the 58th minute. Pinheiro scored a consolation from the spot.

Pacos Ferreira 0 – Braga 2 (Superliga, August 23, 2008) A scrambled goal by Meyong and a breakaway goal from Cesar put Braga off to a flyer.

Standard Liege 3 – Westerlo 0 (Jupiler League, August 23, 2008) Standard took a stranglehold of the match with goals from Toama and Mbokani in the 38th and 40th minutes. Mbokani completed the scoring in the second half, lifting the ball over the keeper and heading home.

Sporting Lokeren 4 – Tubize 1 (Jupiler League, August 23, 2008) Israeli Avi Strul scored the cheekiest goal of the weekend, spotting the keeper well off his line from a free-kick on the centre-circle, and lobbing the keeper to the delight of the home crowd.

Galatasaray 4 – Denizlispor 1 (Super Lig, August 23, 2008) Harry Kewell scored on his league debut for Gala, striking in the 34th minute from a cross from Hasan Sas. Fatih Yigen equalised nine minutes later, but the turning point came when Murat Karakoc was sent off for the visitors. Balta restored the home side’s advantage in the 76th minute, Ozbek added a third after 84 minutes and Lincoln completed the rout in stoppage time.

Gaziantepspor 1 – Fenerbahce 0 (Super Lig, August 23, 2008) Fener suffered a setback on day one of the new Turkish season, Tabata firing home the only goal ten minutes before time.

Basel 4 – Neuchatel Xamax 3 (Swiss Super League, August 23, 2008) The seven-goal thriller was set up by a breathless first half which saw the sides head into the break at 4-2. Huggel (24) Derdiyok (28) and Derdiyok again (34) put Basel in the ascendancy. But a brace from Coly gave Xamax hope, only for Carlitos to add a fourth for the host on the stroke of half time. Rossi pulled another goal back for Xaax in the 50th minute but Basel saw out the win.

Vorskla Poltava 1 – Shakhtar Donetsk 0 (Vyscha Liga, August 23, 2008) Kravchenko got the only goal on four minutes with a fantastic long-range strike.

Piast Gliwice 1 – Arka Gdynia 2 (Ekstraklasa, August 23, 2008) Piast finally lost their undefeated record at the start of the Polish season. Zakrzewski opened for Arka before being left unmarked in the box to add number two. The hosts pulled a goal back through Wrobel’s stunning strike.
