The appointment of Alan Shearer as the new Newcastle manager took the world of football by surprise, many still left wondering whether this is actually the best April Fool’s joke ever as they simply refuse to believe the news to be true.
There is reason why many have reacted with skepticism, particularly having regard to Big Al’s comment made at the start of the season when Shearer turned down the opportunity to work alongside Kevin Keegan. Back then Shearer claimed “it remains an ambition to manage [Newcastle] some day but when that will be, I don’t know.”
Eight months later and that time has apparently arrived.
In the flurry of activity since the news broke on the wire, the bookies have been busy reassessing the odds associated with the Magpies, with the current book placing the Toon at 11/10 to get relegated. This places the Black and Whites third favourites for the drop, the Baggies holding the shortest odds at 1/20, while Middlesbrough are also odds on at 8/15.
In the event that Alan Shearer can galvanise the Toon into the great escape, Stoke (13/8), Hull (5/2), Portsmouth (7/2), Sunderland (5/1), Blackburn (5/1) and Bolton (11/1) will be forced to scrap it out as one of the group will be destined to play Championship football next term.
