Peter Reid meets Diego Maradona, kisses the hand of God
Abu Dhabi Sports TV pulled off a real coup last week as they scheduled a meeting between Peter Reid and Diego Maradona at Al Wasl, where the latter is now coach.
Reid, of course, was part of the 1986 England World Cup side that lost to Maradona’s Argentina in the quarter-final and only last June had labelled Diego as “still a cheat.”
When it actually came to meeting again, Reid was all smiles. Joking how he knew Maradona’s back better due to his brilliant solo goal for the second against England and then holding the “hand of God” before kissing it which had beaten Peter Shilton for the opener.
Reid also calls Maradona a “top man” and Diego cheekily turns to the camera and says, in English, “Excuse me”.
There follows a pretty awkward exchange between the two former internationals, involving two translators, before Reid goes to watch an Al Wasl training session. Predictably, the clip ends with Maradona scoring a fine free-kick in front of his squad.
