At 32-years-old, Turkish-Brazilian midfielder Mehmet Aurelio must have thought that he’d seen it all in football, but last weekend in the Spanish Segunda Division the Real Betis man contrived to create one of the worst penalty fails of the season.
The match in question was Saturday’s Spanish second tier encounter between eleventh-placed Gimnastic and fifth-placed Betis.
Betis took a second half lead when Cameroonian striker Achille Emana Edzimbi confidently converted a 77th minute penalty. But then Betis had the opportunity to double their advantage with a second spot-kick, and this time Mehmet Aurelio stood up to take responsibility from the spot.
What transpired though was comedy gold, as Aurelio failed to get anywhere near the target with an outstanding penalty blooper.
